Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the LaboratoryForty miles north of Manhattan, deep within the sterile, high-security corridors of the Hudson Biomedical Institute, Dr. Mira Lawson stared at a digital mass spectrometer screen with utter disbelief.

The room smelled of liquid nitrogen and ozone. Rows of blue-lit centrifuges hummed softly in the background.
Beside her, Marco Ellis stood like a stone statue, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on the laboratory doors.
"Marco," Dr. Lawson whispered, her fingers flying across her keyboard to recalibrate the molecular breakdown. "Where did you say you got this sample?"
"I didn't say," Marco replied flatly. "And you didn't ask."
Dr. Lawson turned her head, her face pale under the fluorescent lights. She was one of the foremost neuro-toxicologists on the East Coast, a woman who had spent twenty years analyzing chemical warfare agents and rare pharmaceutical compounds for federal agencies.
"This isn't a normal drug, Marco," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "Look at the peptide chain here. It's a synthetic derivative of tetrodotoxin combined with a custom-engineered neural receptor blocker. If a healthy person takes this once, it mimics total spinal cord trauma. If they take it twice a day for six months..."
"They stay paralyzed," Marco finished for her.
"Not just paralyzed," Dr. Lawson corrected, pointing a trembling finger at the monitor. "It creates irreversible muscle atrophy. By month eight, the nervous tissue starts to die off completely. The victim becomes a permanent prisoner in their own body."
Marco’s face hardened into something terrifying. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
"Who manufactures this?" Marco asked.
"Nobody," Dr. Lawson swallowed hard. "Not legally. This requires a level-four bio-lab facility and millions of dollars in specialized synthesis equipment. There are only three private labs in the tri-state area licensed to handle these precursors."
"Name them."
"St. Jude’s Research Wing, Vanguard Pharmaceuticals... and the private subterranean lab operated directly out of the Bellandi estate's East Wing annex."
Marco stared at her. The silence in the laboratory grew deafening.
"The East Wing annex," Marco repeated slowly. "The one Dr. Keene uses for his personal medical equipment."
Dr. Lawson nodded slowly. "If Lorenzo has been taking this... he hasn't been recovering because someone inside his own inner circle has been poisoning him every single day."
Marco didn't waste another second. He pulled his phone from his pocket, hit speed dial one, and waited for the line to connect.
"Boss," Marco said the second the call picked up. "We found the source."

"Tell me," Lorenzo’s voice came back instantly, cold as Siberian ice.
"It’s coming from inside the house. Keene’s private lab in the East Wing. And Boss... Vanessa’s signature is all over the requisition orders."
