Chapter 7 - The Cleansing FireBy 4:00 AM, the last of the police sirens had faded into the wet New York night.

Dr. Daniel Keene and Vanessa Rourke sat in the back of separate federal transport vans, their wrists locked in heavy steel cuffs. The evidence Marco and Dr. Lawson provided to the FBI—spanning wire transfers, tox-screen logs, and internal conspiracy memos—ensured they would never see daylight again as free citizens.

The Bellandi mansion was finally quiet.

Lorenzo stood on the second-floor balcony, looking out over the sprawling estate. The rain had stopped, leaving the autumn air crisp and sharp. His legs felt strong, his muscles burning with the glorious pain of full recovery.

Marco walked out onto the balcony, holding two crystal glasses of aged bourbon. He handed one to Lorenzo.

"The Vanguard board members are panicking," Marco said, taking a sip. "They thought you were vegetable food. Now that word is out that Lorenzo Bellandi is back on his feet... half of them have already booked flights to South America."

"Let them run," Lorenzo said, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "They can't outrun what's coming. Take over their shipping terminals by noon tomorrow. Leave nothing."

"Consider it done," Marco nodded. He paused, looking down toward the garden. "What about the girl?"

Lorenzo followed his gaze. Down on the lawn, the first rays of dawn were breaking over the eastern treeline.

"She stayed true to her promise," Lorenzo murmured softly. "She washed my feet, and she brought me back to life."

"A dangerous weakness, Boss," Marco warned gently. "Softness in our line of work..."

"It’s not weakness, Marco," Lorenzo interrupted, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, unbreakable steel. "It’s a reminder. For six months, I let people dictate my limits. I let them put me in a chair. Never again."

He took a slow sip of his drink, his eyes fixed on the horizon.
