Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the MirrorThe air in the visitation room turned to ice. Ethan’s small, trembling index finger didn’t point to a stranger or a hardened criminal.

It pointed directly at Uncle Marcus.

Marcus—my father’s younger brother, the man who had paid for our groceries, tucked Ethan into bed when he had nightmares, and held my hand while I cried at my father’s empty funeral—stood frozen near the security doors. His usual warm, comforting smile had vanished, replaced by a ghastly, pale mask of absolute horror.

"Ethan... what are you talking about, buddy?" Marcus stammered, taking a slow step forward, his voice dripping with forced tenderness. "You're confused. It’s been six years. You were just a baby—"

"No!" Ethan screamed, his voice cracking with years of suppressed terror. "It was you! You told me if I ever said a word, you’d put me in the ground next to Dad! You said Mom would hate me forever!"

My breath hitched in my throat. The room spun. Marcus? My mind frantically tried to reject it. Marcus was the family savior. When the court took away our home to pay legal fees, Marcus took us in. When I cried myself to sleep over Dad's death and Mom's conviction, Marcus was the one who brought me hot tea and told me to be strong.

"Warden, call the state investigators immediately," the head guard barked, stepping between Marcus and my little brother. "Lock down this room. Nobody leaves."

"This is insane!" Marcus shouted, his gentle demeanor shattering instantly as two officers moved toward him. "The boy is traumatized! He’s misremembering! The court case was airtight! You're going to trust the word of a hysterical fourteen-year-old over six years of forensic evidence?!"

I looked down at my mother. She was still on her knees, handcuffs clanking against the cold tile floor. Tears carved clean lines down her ash-covered cheeks. She didn't look at Marcus. She looked up at me.

"Ava..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sirens now ringing through the facility. "I told you. I told you I didn't do it."

Every unread letter I had tossed into a cardboard box under my bed flashed before my eyes like a firing squad. Six years of absolute silence. Six years of letting her rot in a maximum-security cell while the real monster sat at our dinner table every single night.

"Ava, listen to me," Marcus pleaded as guards slammed him against the wall to pat him down. "I’m your family! I raised you! Your mother is a master manipulator—she’s getting into the boy's head!"

I stepped in front of Ethan, hiding him behind my back. My heart pounded so violently against my ribs I thought it would crack. I stared into the eyes of the man who had raised me for six years, and for the first time, I didn't see an uncle.

I saw a predator.

"Ava," Marcus sneered, his voice dropping an octave, losing every trace of the loving uncle he had pretended to be. "If you open this door, you won't like what comes out. Some secrets were meant to stay buried with your father."
