Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Café 118The morning sun broke through the clouds, casting a crisp golden light over the wet streets of Chicago.

At 7:30 AM, Café 118 was already bustling. White-collar workers lined up for espresso, unaware of the storm brewing behind the scene.
Brent Cole walked around the floor, adjusting chairs and barking orders at the kitchen crew. He noticed Mark Vance standing near the front counter, wearing his street clothes and holding little Lily’s hand.
Brent’s eyes narrowed as he stormed over. “What the hell are you doing here, Vance? I fired you last night. Get out before I have security throw you out.”
Mark didn’t flinch. He looked Brent dead in the eyes. “I was told to be here by corporate office at 7:45 AM.”
“Corporate?” Brent laughed mockingly. “You think corporate cares about a washed-up loser like you? I spoke to Arthur Vance this morning. Your termination is final, and your insurance is officially canceled as of midnight tonight. Now get out!”
Just then, the front doors of the café flew open.
A flood of journalists, camera operators, and news reporters poured into the small establishment. Microphones, flashing cameras, and heavy broadcasting gear quickly filled the room. Customers gasped and pulled out their phones as the chaotic media circus unfolded.
Brent’s face went pale, then bright red. He quickly adjusted his tie and smoothed his hair, stepping toward the camera crew with an oily, practiced smile.
“Welcome to Northstar Café 118!” Brent announced loudly, raising his hands. “We are honored to host Channel 5 News! May I ask what special event we are covering today?”
The lead reporter ignored Brent entirely, turning her microphone toward the door as a long silver limousine pulled up to the curb.
The back door opened. Out stepped Evelyn Hart.
She was dressed in an exquisite custom-tailored emerald green suit, her dark hair pulled back into an elegant, flawless knot. Behind her stepped Richard Sterling and Arthur Vance, both looking deeply nervous and confused by the sudden media presence.
Brent’s eyes widened in horror. He recognized the woman in the green suit instantly.
It was the broken, homeless woman he had humiliated, doused in soup, and thrown out into the rain twelve hours ago.
His jaw dropped. The breath hitched in his throat.
Evelyn walked into the café with absolute grace, her high heels clicking softly against the freshly mopped black-and-white tile floor. She didn't look at Brent immediately. Instead, she walked straight past him, stopping right in front of Mark Vance and little Lily.
“Good morning, Mark,” Evelyn said, her voice warm and ringing clearly through the silent café. “I told you last night that I would return the favor.”
May you like
Mark gasped, his hand trembling as he realized who she was. “Evelyn... you’re... you’re Evelyn Hart.”
“I am,” she said with a gentle smile. She reached down and patted Lily’s cheek. “And today, justice is on the menu.”
