Chapter 7 - The Mastermind UnmaskedEvelyn stepped closer to Arthur Vance and Richard Sterling, holding up a sleek black folder.

“For five years, Vice President Arthur Vance has used his corporate position to embezzle over twelve million dollars from regional supply chains,” Evelyn announced.

The reporters gasped loudly. Cameras zoomed in on Arthur’s trembling face.

“And how did he hide it?” Evelyn asked rhetorically. “By falsifying labor reports, underpaying front-line staff, and actively ruining the life of his own brother, Mark Vance, whom he robbed of his family inheritance!”

“That’s slander!” Arthur screamed, his face turning purple with rage. “You have no proof!”

“We have five years of forensic audit files, Arthur,” Dana Brooks spoke up loudly, holding a stack of bank statements. “Including the offshore account in the Cayman Islands you opened under your wife’s maiden name. Federal investigators were handed the files two hours ago.”

Right on cue, the glass doors of the café opened. Four uniformed agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation walked in, led by a sharp-looking agent in a dark coat.

“Arthur Vance? Richard Sterling?” the lead agent asked calmly. “You are both under arrest for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy.”

Richard Sterling turned on Arthur instantly. “I had nothing to do with the embezzlement! Arthur set up those accounts! I only signed off on the operational changes!”

“Save it for the grand jury, Richard,” Evelyn said coldly as the federal agents slapped handcuffs onto the wrists of both executives.

As Arthur was being led away in chains, he turned to stare at his younger brother. Mark stood tall, holding his daughter tightly, looking at his criminal brother not with anger, but with profound pity.

“Mark...” Arthur choked out, his arrogance completely shattered. “Help me...”

Mark simply shook his head softly. “You reaped what you sowed, Arthur.”

The agents hauled the disgraced executives out into the bright morning light, surrounded by a wall of flashing news cameras.

The café was silent for a moment, the remaining customers and staff staring at Evelyn in absolute awe.

Evelyn turned her attention back to Brent Cole, who was cowering near the kitchen doors, attempting to slip away unnoticed.

“Mr. Cole,” Evelyn called out smoothly.

Brent froze, slowly turning around with tears of terror in his eyes. “Ms. Hart... please... I was just following orders! I have a family!”

“So does Mark Vance,” Evelyn replied fiercely. “And unlike you, he preserved his integrity when he had nothing left to give.”

Evelyn walked over to Marcy, the server who stood nervously behind the counter.

“Marcy,” Evelyn said softly. “Thank you for sending the envelope. It took immense courage to stand up against systemic abuse.”

Marcy wiped a tear from her eye. “I couldn’t stay quiet anymore, Ms. Hart.”

“Starting today,” Evelyn announced, turning back to the crowd, “Brent Cole is terminated, effective immediately, with cause and no severance. Marcy is promoted to General Manager of Café 118 with a fifty-percent pay increase.”

The entire café burst into loud, spontaneous applause and cheers. Brent lowered his head in utter disgrace and scurried out the back door into the alleyway like a beaten dog.
