Chapter 1 - THE CURTAIN RISESThe air inside the grand ballroom of the Grand Hyatt was thick with the scent of expensive champagne, orchid displays, and unchecked hubris. It was Pendelton Dynamics’ 25th Anniversary Gala—a night meant to crown Julian as the next Chief Executive Officer.

Julian stood near the center stage, impeccably tailored in a bespoke tuxedo. His mother, Beatrice, fluttered beside him like a queen mother in draped silk, her diamond necklace catching the glittering crystal chandeliers. Beside Julian stood Chloe Miller, wearing a crimson satin dress that practically screamed victory.

"Look at them," Beatrice purred into Julian’s ear, taking a sip of Dom Pérignon. "The board is eating out of your hand. That pathetic little girl hasn’t said a word in two weeks. Her spirit is broken."

"I told you, Mother," Julian replied, adjusting his cuff links with a smirk. "She was just a low-level attorney playing at big leagues. A weekend on a cold beach cures anyone of their bravado."

They didn't know I was standing in the shadows by the AV control booth.

My split lip had healed into a faint pink scar, hidden expertly beneath long-wear matte lipstick. My bruised ribs were bound tight under a obsidian-black evening gown that fit like armor. In my hand, I held my phone—not the one Julian threw into the ocean, but my encrypted secondary device, mirrored directly to the venue’s massive $200,000 LED backdrop screen.

The master of ceremonies took the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, please direct your attention to the main screen for a special tribute to our incoming CEO, Mr. Julian Pendelton-Vane!"

The lights dimmed. Julian took the stage, raising his hands to soak in the applause.

Click.

The screen didn't display the sleek corporate documentary Julian had commissioned. Instead, a harsh white screen appeared, followed by a glaring red timestamp: OCTOBER 14 - 11:42 PM.

An audio clip blared through the stadium-grade sound system. Julian's voice, unmistakable and crystal clear, echoed across the silent ballroom:

"Maybe walking home will teach you when to stay quiet. Delete the recording, or I’ll make sure nobody ever finds you on this beach!"

The applause died instantly. A collective gasp rippled through eight hundred corporate executives, board members, and journalists.

Julian froze. His face drained of all color.
