Chapter 7 - THE TWIST IN THE GLASS"Two people," I repeated, keeping my voice entirely neutral. "Julian... and who else?"

"Me," Arthur said softly. "I had the master key code. But I didn't authorize that $12 million transfer, Miss Vance. And when my IT forensics team tracked the IP address that initiated the transfer..."
Arthur opened the folder. Inside was a printed system log.
IP Address: 192.168.1.104
MAC Address: Encrypted Secondary Device (Property of: Vance, E.)
Destination Account: Geneva Private Trust #9904-X
I looked at the sheet of paper, then raised my eyes to meet Arthur's.
"You knew," Arthur whispered, a mix of shock and bitter realization in his aged voice. "You knew Julian was corrupt before you even took the job. You let him take you to that beach. You let him attack you."
"I didn't 'let' him do anything, Mr. Pendelton," I said, leaning back in my chair. "Julian was a violent, arrogant narcissist. I knew if I backed him into a corner about the fraud, he would snap. I needed his violence to be public, undeniable, and unpardonable so that no judge, no lawyer, and no amount of family money could ever get him out of a prison cell."
"And the $12 million?" Arthur asked, his voice trembling slightly.
"Consider it my legal retainer," I replied calmly. "And my compensation for a split lip, three broken ribs, and two hours bleeding out in freezing sea sand while your nephew's mother called me an attention-seeker."
Arthur stared at me, paralyzed by the sheer cold calculation of the woman sitting across from him.
"You're going to call the police?" I asked gently.
Arthur closed his eyes for a long moment, taking a deep, heavy breath. Then, slowly, he reached out and closed the leather folder.

"If I report this," Arthur said, his voice barely above a whisper, "the scandal will destroy what's left of this company. The stock will collapse to zero. Eight thousand innocent employees will lose their jobs."
"Exactly," I said, standing up and picking up my briefcase and box. "You get to keep your legacy intact. Julian stays in prison forever. Beatrice dies penniless. And I walk away paid in full for my services."
