Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW IN THE REARVIEWThe winter storm raged over the Massachusetts Turnpike as Richard’s armored SUV cut through the slush. Inside the climate-controlled cabin, six-year-old Ethan was fast asleep, wrapped in a heated blanket, his breathing steady under the watch of two private paramedics who had finally met them at the safe zone.

Richard sat in the front passenger seat, staring at the high-definition display connected to his company’s private intelligence network. On the screen was a frozen frame of the little girl, Mia, and the hooded woman outside Gate B23.
“Talk to me, Colin,” Richard commanded, his tone devoid of warmth.
Colin tapped his laptop from the back seat. “The child’s full name is Mia Vance. Seven years old. She lives in a condemned tenement block near the docks in South Boston with her mother, Sarah Vance. No official employment records for Sarah in seven years. No bank accounts, no property registered.”
“And the hit contract you mentioned?”
“It was posted on an encrypted board four hours before your flight landed,” Colin explained, sweating despite the vehicle's air conditioning. “Someone put a five-million-dollar bounty on Sarah Vance’s location. The coordinates listed in the bounty hit… were Gate B23 at Logan Airport.”
Richard’s mind raced. “They weren’t at the airport to catch a flight. They were running.”
“Or,” Colin said quietly, “they were looking for you.”
Richard turned around slowly. “What are you implying?”
“Sir, your son’s medical condition—the specific valve malfunction—is exceptionally rare. Only three medical research firms in the world manufacture that specific component. One of them is Harrison Dynamics, your subsidiary. The second is a Swiss firm. The third…” Colin hesitated.
“The third is Vance Bio-Tech,” Richard finished, the blood suddenly draining from his own face.
Ten years ago, Vance Bio-Tech had been Richard’s fierce corporate rival, run by brilliant biomedical engineer Marcus Vance. The company went bankrupt overnight following a catastrophic laboratory explosion that killed Marcus and destroyed their flagship patents. Marcus’s wife, Sarah, had vanished shortly after.
“Mia is Marcus Vance’s daughter,” Richard muttered, piecing the nightmare together. “She recognized the valve because her father designed it.”
Suddenly, the heavy armored SUV shuddered violently as a dark, unmarked pickup truck slammed into their rear bumper.
The paramedic in the back yelled out as Ethan woke up crying.
“Driver, report!” Richard yelled, bracing himself against the dashboard.
“Two black trucks, sir! No plates!” the driver shouted, spinning the wheel as the SUV skidded across the icy lane. “They’re trying to pit-maneuver us onto the shoulder!”
Through the side mirror, Richard saw a second black vehicle pull alongside them. The window rolled down, revealing a masked man holding a high-powered glass-breaker device. But the man wasn't pointing it at Richard’s window. He was targeting the rear door where Ethan sat.
“They’re not trying to kill us,” Richard realized with a wave of cold horror. “They’re trying to take Ethan!”
The driver slammed on the brakes, forcing the side truck to overshoot them. The heavy SUV swerved into the breakdown lane, blowing through a snowbank and crashing onto a secondary access road beneath an overpass.
“Get us to the South Boston docks!” Richard ordered, his jaw set.

“Sir? That’s an unsecure zone!” Colin panicked.
“That’s where Sarah and Mia live,” Richard said, pulling a concealed firearm from under his seat. “Whoever is hunting that little girl just tried to take my son. They aren't two separate incidents. They are the same trap.”
