Chapter 4 - The Grand Foyer

The cameras flashed like lightning inside the grand foyer of Sterling Manor.

Dozens of reporters from network news, tabloids, and financial blogs crowded behind the velvet ropes, their microphones bristling like a nest of silver vipers. At the center of the mahogany podium stood Eleanor Sterling, dressed in mourning black, her face etched with the precise degree of sorrow that a grieving matriarch should display.

Julian stood two steps behind her, his eyes hollow, staring vacantly at the floor.

"Thank you all for coming," Eleanor began, her voice trembling with manufactured emotion. "As you know, our family has suffered an unimaginable tragedy. My sweet daughter-in-law, Valerie, in a moment of tragic exhaustion... lost her footing on the grand staircase. Despite our family's immediate response and the heroic efforts of the medical staff..."

She paused, lifting a black-bordered handkerchief to dab at a dry eye.

"At Sterling Estate, safety has always been our paramount concern," Eleanor continued, turning smoothly toward the large projection screen behind her. "In fact, to ensure complete transparency and to honor memory with absolute truth, I have voluntarily handed over our security server logs to the authorities. Let the record show that we have nothing to hide."

She pressed the remote in her hand. "Here is the unedited truth."

The screen flickered. The room went dead silent.

Instead of a corrupted file or a distant, blurry shot, the massive high-definition screen burst into crystal-clear 4K video. It showed Eleanor standing at the top of the landing. It showed me, nine months pregnant, turning around with a stack of archives.

Then came the audio. Amplified through the estate’s multi-thousand-dollar surround-sound system, every sound reverberated through the cavernous foyer.

“You’re standing in the light, Valerie. Move.” “Eleanor, please, I can barely see past this box—” “Move.”

The image on the screen showed Eleanor’s manicured hand shooting forward with cold, deliberate force, striking my shoulder blades just as my weight shifted on the polished marble.

A collective gasp sucked the air out of the room. Flashbulbs erupted in a blinding, chaotic frenzy, not to capture Eleanor’s grief, but to freeze the look of absolute, unadulterated terror and shock twisting across her face as she realized which tape was playing.

Julian’s head snapped up. His eyes widened as the speakers broadcast Eleanor’s final, whispered verdict to my collapsing body:

“You brought this on yourself, you little cockroach. If you die here, it’s just natural selection.”

May you like

The audio hung in the air long after the screen went black.

Eleanor stood frozen at the podium, her mouth slightly open, the microphone picking up the frantic, shallow rattle of her breath. She slowly turned her head toward the security camera lens on the landing, her eyes wide with sudden, suffocating horror.
