Chapter 8 - The Final Frame

The evening news broadcast across the state flashed a quick thirty-second update on the Sterling case as a local human interest piece.
“...And today, the former Sterling Estate officially welcomed its four-hundredth resident to the newly established Valerie Sterling Center. Meanwhile, former matriarch Eleanor Sterling was transferred to State Penitentiary Unit B, where she will serve out her sentence in absolute isolation...”
In her sterile, fluorescent-lit cell three hundred miles away, Eleanor sat on the edge of a metal cot, staring blankly at a small, barred window that looked out onto a gray concrete wall. There were no cameras here. There was no security footage to manipulate, no audience to impress, no servants to terrorize.
There was only the quiet, crushing weight of her own irrelevance.
Back at the estate, I stood on the back veranda as the sun dipped below the tree line, painting the sky in violent shades of gold and bruised purple. My phone buzzed in my pocket. A notification from the security registry—not a camera, but an encrypted alert from the foundation's financial tracker.
The final asset transfer from Eleanor’s hidden offshore accounts had cleared. Every single penny had landed where it belonged.

I raised a glass of sparkling water toward the setting sun, whispering into the empty evening air:
"Checkmate."
