Chapter 7 - The Unwritten Clause

Six months later, the grand staircase of Sterling Estate had been completely demolished.
The heavy, cold marble slabs—the very ones stained with my blood—had been ripped out by industrial construction crews and replaced with warm, modern white oak and open glass railings that allowed light to flood every corner of the foyer.
There were no security cameras blinking red on the landings anymore.
I stood at the top of the new staircase, wearing a crisp white linen dress, looking down at the sunlit lobby. The estate had been legally repurposed. The main manor was now a state-of-the-art recovery and legal advocacy center for women escaping domestic sabotage and financial abuse—funded entirely by the liquidated accounts of the Sterling family empire.
The front doors opened, and Victoria Vance walked in, carrying a thick leather briefcase.
"The appellate court denied Eleanor’s final motion for bail," Victoria announced, stepping onto the wood floor with a satisfying click of her heels. "She’ll be spending the next twenty-five years in maximum security without the possibility of parole. Her lawyers tried to claim mental instability due to narcissistic ego collapse."
"And the judge?" I asked, turning to face her.
Victoria smiled, a rare, genuine expression of triumph. "The judge took one look at the original 4K server log, smiled at me, and asked if we had extra copies for the law school library."
She stepped up beside me, looking out over the grand room where dozens of women were moving through the halls, rebuilding their lives with the resources Eleanor had spent a lifetime hoarding.
"You know," Victoria said quietly, leaning against the glass railing. "Most people in your position would have taken the money and vanished to the south of France. Why stay here? Why turn the dragon's cave into a sanctuary?"

I looked down at my left hand, where the heavy diamond wedding band had been replaced by a simple, elegant platinum band of my own design—one I had forged myself.
"Because ghosts don't haunt houses, Victoria," I said, my voice carrying a quiet, unshakable steel. "They remodel them."
