Chapter 4 - The Shadow Behind the Throne

Eleanor Hargrove stood motionless in the grand entrance, her tailored suit immaculate, her expression completely unreadable.

"Mother?" Ethan whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of betrayal and disbelief. "Tell me she's lying. Tell me you didn't do this."

Eleanor didn't blink. She slowly walked into the room, her heels clicking against the marble with terrifying precision. She didn't look at Rosa, nor at the little girl shivering on the couch.

"I did what was necessary for your future, Ethan," Eleanor said calmly, as if discussing the stock market. "You were on the verge of securing thirty million dollars in seed capital. You needed prestige. You needed a woman from a respectable, established family—like Vivian. Not a poor nursing student from rural Texas whose family was one medical bill away from bankruptcy."

"She was carrying my child!" Ethan roared, the sound echoing through the massive vaulted ceilings of the mansion.

"And look at where you are today!" Eleanor shot back, her cold composure finally cracking into sharp authority. "You are a billionaire! You own this estate! You built a tech empire! Do you honestly believe you would be sitting on the cover of Forbes if you were tied down at twenty-nine to a baby and a nurse's salary? I saved your life, Ethan!"

"You ruined my life!" Ethan screamed, tears falling freely now. "You stole four years of my daughter's life! You let her grow up in poverty while I lived in a twelve-acre palace!"

Vivian stepped beside Eleanor, desperate to salvage her position. "Ethan, your mother was just protecting you! Think about the company! Think about our wedding next month! The media will destroy us if this scandal breaks!"

Ethan looked at Vivian, then at his mother, and finally at Rosa, who was holding their daughter tightly, asking for nothing, expecting nothing.

"There is no wedding," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low whisper.

Vivian gasped. "What?!"

"Get out," Ethan said, turning his back on Vivian. "Pack your things and leave my house before sunrise. If you are still on my property when the sun comes up, I will have you arrested for assaulting Rosa at the pool tonight. There were fifty witnesses."

"Ethan, you can't be serious!" Vivian shrieked, her composed facade utterly shattering into ugly hysteria. "I am a Sterling! My family will ruin your corporate standing!"

"Try me," Ethan said coldly. "Now get out."

Vivian turned to Eleanor for help, but Eleanor was staring at her son, realizing for the first time in her life that she had lost complete control over him. Vivian stormed upstairs, screaming curses that echoed through the corridors.

Ethan turned back to his mother. "And you... leave. Don't come back until I call you. And it may be years before I do."
