Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OF DOUBTThe waiting room of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital was dead quiet, save for the hum of the vending machines and the rhythmic ticking of the wall clock. It was 3:00 AM.

Oliver was stabilized in the ICU, sleeping under a humidified oxygen tent. Maya sat on the vinyl couch, a white bandage taped over the bridge of her nose, her eyes swollen and red. Across the room, Ryan stood near the window, watching the rain strike the glass.

The paper in his pocket felt like a burning ember.

Non-matching.

Four years ago, Ryan had met Maya at an art gallery opening in downtown Chicago. She was an independent restorer, fiercely passionate, untouched by the corporate cynicism that defined Ryan’s world. When they married, Evelyn had boycotted the wedding, calling Maya a social climber looking for a piece of the Whitmore fortune. When Maya got pregnant with Oliver, Evelyn had insisted on lavish private care, but Ryan had thought it was a peace offering.

Now, he realized every gift from his mother was a wiretap. Every generosity was a trap.

“Ryan?” Maya’s soft voice broke the silence. She stood up, wrapping her sweater tightly around herself. “The doctors said Oliver can come home tomorrow if his lungs stay clear. Why aren't you sitting down? You haven't said a word since we left the house.”

Ryan pulled the paper from his coat jacket and laid it flat on the small table between them.

Maya looked down at the header: Genetics International Labs. She read the red stamp, and all the color drained from her face, leaving her ghost-white.

“She lied to you,” Maya whispered, her lower lip trembling. “Ryan, you know I’ve never been with anyone else. You know Oliver is yours! Look at his eyes, look at his hands—”

“This test was run six months ago, Maya,” Ryan said, his tone ominously calm. “My mother had this in her private file. Why would she have a fake DNA test unless... or is it real?”

“It’s fake!” Maya raised her voice, stepping toward him, her hands outstretched. “How can you even question it? She fabricated this to make you abandon me! Don't you see her game? If she destroys my credibility, if she makes you doubt Oliver’s parentage, I lose all support! I become an unfaithful, unstable intruder who doesn't deserve a dime or custody!”

Ryan closed his eyes, tearing his hand through his hair. The seed of doubt, once planted by a master manipulator like Evelyn, was an insidious poison. He wanted to believe Maya with every fiber of his soul, but the precision of Evelyn’s setup was terrifying.

Suddenly, Ryan’s phone buzzed on the table. It was an incoming call from Arthur Pendelton, the senior partner at Whitmore & Associates—Evelyn’s personal attorney for thirty years.

Ryan answered, putting it on speaker. “Arthur. She’s in a jail cell. Don't tell me you’re trying to bail her out.”

“Ryan, listen to me very carefully,” Arthur’s solemn voice echoed through the speaker. “I am not calling on your mother’s behalf. I am calling from my private office. Your mother was released an hour ago on a procedural bail exception signed by Judge Vance.”

Maya gasped. Ryan’s jaw tightened. “How? She assaulted my wife and withheld a life-saving medication from a infant!”

“She has deep roots in the judicial district, Ryan,” Arthur said, sounding weary. “But that isn't why I’m calling. Your mother just activated the emergency clause of the Whitmore Family Trust. She has summoned an extraordinary meeting of the board for 8:00 AM today. She is filing to remove you as Chief Executive Officer on the grounds of gross negligence and mental incompetence—claiming you are being manipulated by a woman who is actively defrauding the family estate.”

“She’s insane,” Ryan snarled.

“No, Ryan. She’s five steps ahead,” Arthur replied. “And if you don't find out who leaked your family medical records to her six months ago, you’re going to lose the company, your home, and your son by noon.”
