Chapter 3 - THE STRANGLED WEALTHBy 7:30 AM, rain was pouring over the glass towers of the Whitmore Financial Center. Ryan walked into the marble lobby with Maya at his side. She refused to stay at the hospital alone, and Ryan refused to let her out of his sight.

The board members were already assembled in the top-floor conference room. These were men and women in tailored suits who had built fortunes alongside Ryan’s late father. When Ryan stepped into the room, a heavy, suffocating silence fell over the mahogany table.

At the head of the table sat Evelyn Whitmore.

She wore a fresh navy-blue suit. Her hair was perfectly sculpted, not a single strand out of place. Her wrists were bare of handcuffs, replaced by gold bangles that clinked softly as she set down her teacup.

“You’re late, Ryan,” Evelyn said, her voice smooth, unaffected by the overnight arrest.

“You belong in a prison cell, Mother,” Ryan said, walking to the foot of the table, his hands resting heavily on the polished wood.

“Let’s stick to the agenda, shall we?” Evelyn gestured to the projector screen behind her. An array of documents appeared—financial records, medical evaluations, and police reports from the previous night.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the board,” Evelyn began, standing up with absolute authority. “Last night was a tragedy. My son’s wife suffered an episode of acute paranoid psychosis in the nursery. She attacked me when I attempted to give my grandson his medication. In her delusion, she accused me of hiding his inhaler. When the police arrived, she and Ryan had staged a scene to Frame me.”

“You monster!” Maya yelled, taking a step forward, but Ryan raised a hand to stop her.

“Furthermore,” Evelyn continued, ignoring the outburst entirely, “I have recently uncovered evidence that Maya Whitmore has been systematically embezzling funds from the charity foundation Ryan set up in her name. Over $1.2 million has been transferred to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands over the last eighteen months.”

Evelyn clicked a remote, and bank statements flashed onto the screen. Maya’s name and signature were clearly visible at the bottom of every wire transfer order.

Maya’s breath caught. “That’s... that’s not my signature! I’ve never even seen those accounts!”

“The board cannot allow the Whitmore name or assets to be dragged through a scandalous custody battle and embezzlement trial,” Evelyn said, looking around the room at the nods of agreement from the older board members. “I move for an immediate vote to strip Ryan of his executive powers and appoint a temporary conservator over the family estate.”

“Wait,” Ryan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, calm tone. He pulled a black USB drive from his pocket and threw it onto the middle of the table. “Before you vote, perhaps the board would like to see the unedited feed from that tiny camera my mother left in the nursery.”

Evelyn’s eyes flickered with a sudden, microscopic jolt of fear.

“You thought the police took the camera,” Ryan said, leaning over the table toward her. “They took the hardware. But the camera was connected to an encrypted cloud server hosted by an independent security firm. I had my IT department retrieve the full, uncompressed stream twenty minutes ago.”

Ryan looked at the board’s tech technician. “Plug it in.”
