Chapter 1 - The First Domino Falls

The audio recording of Isabella’s voice echoed off the polished mahogany and marble walls of the parlor, a chilling reminder of the cruelty that had festered within the Moretti mansion while Lorenzo was out securing an empire.
Isabella’s wrist was trapped in his grip—not with the casual roughness of a street thug, but with the cold, immovable pressure of a hydraulic press. Her breathing turned shallow, her chest heaving as the last of her practiced composure shattered.
"You think this... this is some kind of trap?" Isabella choked out, her voice dropping the honeyed elegance she wore like armor. She tried to yank her hand back, but Lorenzo didn't budge an inch. "A few manipulated voice snippets? Lorenzo, look at me! I am your wife. I carry the Moretti name in high society. You are going to ruin everything we've built over a crying child?"
Lorenzo’s eyes were completely devoid of warmth. They were the eyes of a man who had stared down rival syndicate bosses, traitors within his own inner circle, and men who had tried to put a bullet through his chest—and had survived by being colder and more calculated than any of them.
"You built nothing, Isabella," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You decorated. You hosted. You smiled for the cameras at charity galas. But this house? This family? You were a guest I invited in to provide a mother's touch. Instead, you acted like a warden in a prison camp."
"If you throw me out, the council will tear you apart!" she hissed, finally dropping the mask entirely. Her face twisted into a snarl of venom and desperation. "My family controls the shipping lanes through the northern ports. Without our alliance, your supply lines dry up in a week. The Italian syndicate will smell blood in the water. You will be fighting a war on two fronts—at home and on the streets!"
Lorenzo slowly released her wrist, stepping back as if touching her contaminated him. He didn’t reach for a gun. He didn't raise his voice. He simply walked over to the desk, picked up his phone, and dialed a single digit.
"Vance," Lorenzo said into the receiver.
"Sir?" came the immediate, crisp voice of his chief of security and tactical commander.
"Lock down the estate perimeter. Nobody enters, nobody leaves. Block all outgoing communication signals from this wing. And contact the northern port authorities."
Isabella’s eyes widened in horror. "What have you done?"
"I don't need your family's shipping lanes, Isabella," Lorenzo replied, locking eyes with her. "Because twenty minutes ago, before I even walked through that front door, my accountants finished liquidating your father’s primary holding company using leveraged debt we acquired last quarter. Your family is bankrupt. As of this morning, they answer to me."
The color drained entirely from Isabella's face. She stumbled backward, her designer heels clicking frantically against the hardwood before she hit the wall.
"That's... that's impossible," she whispered, sliding down until she was sitting on the edge of the Persian rug, right where Maria Elena had been huddled moments before. "You couldn't have... my father would have known..."
"Your father was too busy trying to embezzle from his own board members to notice the hostile takeover happening right under his nose," Lorenzo said, turning his back on her. "Rosa!"
The heavy oak door swung open instantly. Rosa stood there, her hands clasped tightly in front of her apron, her eyes darting between Lorenzo and the trembling woman on the floor.
"Sir?"
"Pack Signora Isabella’s belongings. Every dress, every jewel, every trinket she brought into this house. Put them in trash bags." Lorenzo didn't even look back at his wife. "Have the guards escort her to the gate. If she touches so much as a doorknob in this house again, throw her into the river."
May you like
"No—Lorenzo, you can't do this to me! You can't just throw me out like trash!" Isabella screamed, lunging forward, but two of Lorenzo’s elite guards materialized in the doorway like ghosts, catching her by the arms and hoisting her up before she could take another step.
Her shrieks echoed down the corridor, fading out as she was dragged away from the only life of luxury she had ever known. But Lorenzo didn’t flinch. His mind was already on the kitchen, and on a little girl who was currently drinking hot chocolate, wondering if her whole world was about to collapse entirely.
