Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

Night had fallen over the Moretti estate, blanketing the sprawling lawns and iron gates in deep, impenetrable shadows. Inside the mansion, however, the lights were blazing.

Maria Elena’s bedroom had been completely transformed. Gone were the sterile, gray-and-white minimalist decorations that Isabella had insisted upon—the cold, lifeless aesthetic designed to make a child feel like an intruder in her own home. In their place, the room was alive with color. A soft lavender wallpaper lined the walls, fairy lights glowed warmly around a brand-new canopy bed, and boxes of art supplies, sketchbooks, and colorful stuffed animals were scattered across a plush white rug.

Maria Elena sat at a brand-new mahogany desk, her tongue slightly between her teeth as she gripped a purple crayon, drawing furiously across a fresh sheet of paper.

Lorenzo stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a cup of black coffee in his hand, watching her with a quiet smile that rarely touched his face.

"Papa," she said without looking up, her small hand moving across the page with total freedom. "Can we plant flowers in the courtyard tomorrow? Real ones. Red ones and yellow ones."

"Whatever you want, princess," Lorenzo replied, walking over and resting a hand gently on her head. "We can plant an entire garden if you want."

"And... can Rosa make pancakes for breakfast? Real ones, with chocolate chips?"

"I’ll tell Rosa right now. If she doesn't make them, I’ll fire her and hire a chef whose only job is making chocolate chip pancakes."

Maria Elena giggled—a bright, musical sound that filled the silent halls of the mansion with a warmth it hadn’t felt since the day her real mother passed away six years ago.

Suddenly, the secure intercom panel mounted on the wall near the door chimed softly.

Lorenzo’s expression shifted instantly. The relaxed father vanished, replaced in a microsecond by the cold, calculating syndicate boss. He walked over to the panel and pressed the audio button.

"Speak," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping an octave.

"Boss," came Vance’s voice through the speaker, laced with a strange urgency. "We have a situation at the outer perimeter gate."

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed. "Did the Rossi family try to send someone?"

"No, sir. It’s not the Rossis. It’s... well, you need to see the security monitors. Come down to the main security hub immediately."

Lorenzo looked back at Maria Elena, who had paused her drawing, her large eyes looking up at him with sudden concern. "Everything is fine, princess. Papa just has to check something downstairs. Rosa is right outside in the hallway. I’ll be back before you finish your drawing."

"Don't be long, Papa," she whispered.

"I won't."

Lorenzo strode down the grand staircase, his heavy boots making no sound on the thick runners. Within two minutes, he entered the subterranean security bunker beneath the mansion—a high-tech command center filled with wall-to-wall monitors displaying every camera angle, motion sensor, and thermal feed of the sprawling estate.

Vance was standing in front of the main monitor, his arms crossed over his chest, staring at a live feed from the front security gates half a mile down the private drive.

"What am I looking at?" Lorenzo demanded, stepping up to the console.

Vance pointed at the screen. "Look closely at the vehicle, Boss. It’s not an assassin. It’s not an operative."

On the screen, parked right outside the heavy iron gates of the estate, was a sleek, unmarked black sedan. The headlights were off. But standing right outside the driver’s side door, illuminated by the amber glow of the security floodlights, was a woman.

She was wearing a long black trench coat, her dark hair blowing slightly in the cool night wind. As the camera zoomed in automatically on her face, Lorenzo felt the breath catch in his throat.

His hand gripped the edge of the metal console so hard the steel groaned under his fingers.

"That's..." Lorenzo muttered, his voice barely above a whisper, sounding for the first time in his life like a man who had seen a ghost. "That’s impossible."
