Chapter 1 - THE WIDOW IN WHITEThe autumn wind whipped through the wrought-iron gates of the Vale estate, carrying the hollow echo of cathedral bells.

Standing on the cobblestone steps of the family mausoleum, Mara Voss—now draped in an immaculate, blindingly white designer dress—wiped a completely dry eye with a lace handkerchief as my father’s mahogany casket was lowered into the ground.

Daniel stood beside me, trembling with barely contained rage, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles were stark white.

"Look at her," Daniel hissed through his teeth, his voice shaking. "She's playing the grieving widow. Dad's body isn't even cold, and she's wearing white like she just won a trophy."

"She thinks she did," I replied quietly, adjusting the collar of my black wool coat.

A few feet away, Mara accepted hollow condolences from a pair of distant cousins, her posture straight, her chin tilted up with absolute arrogance. When our elderly Aunt Clara confronted her at the chapel doors, calling her a shameless parasite, Mara hadn't backed down.

She had leaned close and whispered the words that would ultimately seal her fate: “Poor families inherit memories. Smart women inherit assets.”

She had no idea that the smart woman standing twenty yards away had spent fourteen years dismantling corporate fraud and predatory estate schemes for breakfast.
