Chapter 2 - THE LIBRARY READINGThe heavy oak doors of my father’s private library clicked shut behind us.

Bookshelves lined the walls from floor to vaulted ceiling—the very room where Dad had taught me chess, corporate law, and how to spot a bluffing opponent.

Mara sat behind Dad’s mahogany desk as if she had owned it for a decade. Standing beside her was Marcus Thorne, a slick, high-priced probate attorney whose reputation for greasing palms in the county courthouse was legendary.

Thorne adjusted his glasses, cleared his throat, and opened a crisp, uncreased leather portfolio.

"Let us dispense with the emotional theatrics," Thorne announced, his voice smooth and condescending. "As the legal representative of Mrs. Mara Vale—formerly Mr. Harrison Vale’s primary private nurse and legally wedded spouse—I am presenting the final, binding testament executed four days prior to his passing."

Daniel lunged forward, slamming his hands onto the desk. "That marriage was a fraud! Dad was heavily medicated on palliative morphine! He couldn't even recognize his own grandchildren!"

Mara didn't blink. She simply leaned back in Dad’s leather chair, crossing one elegant leg over the other.

"He recognized enough to sign his name, Daniel," Mara said, her voice dripping with cold, venomous amusement. "The marriage certificate is fully valid, notarized, and filed with the state registry. The new will leaves the Greenwich mansion, forty-two million dollars in liquid capital, and the controlling share of Vale Maritime to me."

Daniel stumbled backward, his face turning pale. He looked at me, his eyes wide with panic. "Chloe... say something! She stole everything!"

I didn't yell. I didn't collapse.

I simply stepped forward, resting my fingertips on the back of a leather armchair, and asked the single question that made Mara's smirk flicker:

"What county clerk witnessed the license?"
