Chapter 2 - The Ghost in ICU

The scent of rusted iron morphed into the chemical sting of rubbing alcohol and ozone.

When my eyes cracked open, the world was no longer grey and green ivy; it was a blinding, sterile white. The rhythmic, frantic beep-beep-beep of a heart monitor filled the room, a digital declaration that I was, against all mathematical probability, still alive.

"Don't try to move, Clara."

A hand, warm and grounded, caught mine. I forced my blurred vision to focus. It wasn't Julian. It was Marcus Vance, the lead investigator for the Federal Audit Bureau—and the man I had secretly met three hours before my fall.

"You're in the secure wing of St. Jude's," Marcus said, his voice low, his eyes scanning the glass window of the ICU door. "The Sterlings think you’re dead. The paramedic on scene was one of my plants. We swapped the triage report before Victoria's cleaners could intercept it. To the world, you are a Jane Doe in a coma at a county facility. To Victoria, you are buried in a nameless plot."

"Julian..." The word tore at my throat like broken glass.

Marcus’s expression darkened. "Julian has taken his place as the rightful heir. Victoria held a press conference this morning. She wept, Clara. A masterclass in high-society grief. She told the world you suffered a psychotic break due to financial stress and leaped from the balcony. Julian is currently secluded at the family estate, 'paralyzed by grief.'"

A bitter laugh threatened to bubble up from my chest, but the chest tubes restricted it to a ragged wheeze. "He pushed me, Marcus. He didn't hesitate. She commanded it, and he did it."

"I know," Marcus said softly, leaning closer. "But right now, your physical status is our only leverage. If Victoria finds out you survived that fall, the hospital will suffer a convenient power failure, and your ventilator will stop. Your spine is severely damaged, Clara. The doctors say it’s a miracle you’re moving your fingers."

"I don't need to walk to burn her empire down," I whispered, the fire in my veins overriding the paralyzing agony. "The ledger. The offshore routing numbers I gave you before I went to the estate..."

Marcus hesitated, looking away. A cold dread, sharper than the fall itself, gripped my heart.

"Marcus, tell me."

"The ledger was in your purse, Clara," he said grimly. "When we recovered your body, the purse was gone. Victoria has it. She knew exactly what you had."

I closed my eyes. The evidence that could dismantle three generations of human trafficking and blood money was back in the hands of the monster who created it. I was broken, hidden in a hospital under a fake name, while the man who tried to kill me was inheriting a billion-dollar throne.

"Then we change the strategy," I said, opening my eyes, the tears burning hot against my skin. "If we can't destroy them from the outside... we make them destroy each other."
