Chapter 5 - Exposure

The video was crystal clear.
On the giant screens, the five hundred guests watched in horrific fascination as the figures of Julian and myself appeared on the balcony. They saw the violent, calculated shove. They saw my body plummet through the air. And then, the camera angle shifted to the courtyard, showing Victoria standing over my broken form, her chilling words subtitled in stark white text across the screen: “Stop making a fuss. Corpses do not look. They rot.”
The ballroom erupted into pure chaos. Screams echoed from the front rows. Socialites dropped their champagne glasses, the crystal shattering against the floor.
"Turn it off! Cut the power!" Victoria roared, her mask completely disintegrating, revealing the raging demon underneath. She whipped around to face Julian, her hands curling into claws. "You pathetic, weak-willed boy! You ruined everything!"
"You made me a monster, Mother!" Julian shrieked back, tears streaming down his face as he backed away from her on the stage. "You told me it was the only way! You broke me!"
Heavy doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open. Marcus’s federal agents, clad in tactical gear and FBI jackets, flooded the room. "Federal agents! Nobody move!"
Victoria stood tall, even as the red laser sights of the agents' weapons danced across her emerald velvet dress. She looked up at the technical booth, her eyes locking onto the tinted glass. She knew. She knew I was alive, and she knew she had lost.
But as the agents converged on the stage, Julian, consumed by a final, desperate stroke of madness, grabbed a decorative glass award from the podium. With a guttural scream, he drove the shattered, jagged edge directly into his own throat.
"Julian!" Victoria shrieked, the first genuine human emotion breaking through her facade as her son collapsed onto the stage, blood pooling rapidly over the Sterling logo embossed on the carpet.
In the booth, I stood up, leaning heavily on my cane. I watched my husband bleed out on the stage, the man who had loved me, betrayed me, and ultimately destroyed himself to escape the shadow of his creation.
Marcus grabbed my arm. "Clara, we need to go. The agents are securing the perimeter, but Victoria's personal security team is unaccounted for. We have to move now."

I didn't move. I watched Victoria fall to her knees, not to cradle her dying son, but to frantically search his pockets for the encryption keys to the family ledgers. Even in the absolute ruin of her life, the legacy was all that mattered.
"She hasn't lost yet, Marcus," I said, my voice dead and hollow. "As long as she’s breathing, she wins."
