CHAPTER 3: The Basement Under the Rainbow House

That night, Lily waited until the whole house went silent.
Then she opened The Rainbow House again.
She studied every page carefully.
The red door.
The yellow window.
The tiny blue mailbox.
The flowers in the garden.
At first, it looked like a normal children’s book.
But then Lily noticed something strange.
Every picture had the same symbol hidden somewhere…
A small silver key.
On the last remaining page, the rainbow ended beside a little wooden house with a basement door.
Under the drawing, one sentence was printed in tiny letters:
“The safest secrets are buried where children learn to smile.”
Lily’s hands trembled.
She looked out her bedroom window.
In the backyard stood her old playhouse.
The one her parents had locked years ago.
The one painted in the exact same colors as the book.
Red door.
Yellow window.
Blue mailbox.
The Rainbow House was real.
Lily slipped outside with the silver key.
The backyard was dark and wet from the rain.
When she reached the playhouse, the key fit perfectly into the tiny lock.
Click.
The door opened.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Old dolls.
A broken rocking chair.
A faded blanket.
Then Lily saw it.
A trapdoor hidden beneath the rug.
She pulled it open and found a narrow staircase leading underground.
At the bottom was a small room filled with boxes.
On the wall were photos of Lily as a baby.
Photos her parents had told her never existed.
Then she found a video tape labeled:
“FOR LILY — WHEN SHE IS OLD ENOUGH.”
Before she could touch it…
A voice behind her whispered:
“You were never supposed to find this.”
Lily turned around.
Her father stood at the stairs.
His face was pale.
His hands were shaking.
“Dad… who am I?”
He stared at her for a long moment.
Then tears filled his eyes.
“You are the daughter of the woman we betrayed.”
And upstairs…
someone else had just entered the house.
The woman in the blue coat had come back.

But this time…
she wasn’t alone.
