Chapter 4 - Blood in the Water

"Down! Get down!"
Alessandro moved with terrifying, animalistic speed. In a fraction of a second, he shoved Luca and me behind a massive marble pillar, his hand sweeping inside his jacket to draw a sleek, suppressed pistol.
Gunshots echoed through the subterranean chamber, shattering the glass panels overlooking the water. Shards of crystal rained down like jagged diamonds.
"Stay here!" Alessandro commanded, his voice slicing through the chaos like a razor.
"What's happening?!" I screamed over the deafening rattle of automatic gunfire. My heart pounded in my throat, cold terror gripping my chest. This wasn't a movie. This was real. Blood, smoke, and death had just entered the room.
"The Moretti syndicate," Alessandro snarled, his eyes flashing with lethal fury. He didn't look like a billionaire anymore; he looked like an executioner. "They tracked the car."
From the shadows of the broken entrance, three masked men rushed in, weapons raised. Alessandro didn't hesitate. With cold, practiced precision, he stepped out from behind the pillar and fired three shots in rapid succession. Three bodies hit the marble floor with dull, heavy thuds.
Silence descended just as quickly as the violence had erupted, broken only by Luca’s terrified sobbing.
I pulled Luca tighter against my chest, shielding his ears, but my eyes were locked on Alessandro. He stood over the fallen men, his breathing controlled, his face entirely expressionless. He wiped a smudge of gunpowder off his cheek with the back of his hand, then turned slowly to look at me.
There was blood on his white dress shirt.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, rushing back to us, dropping to his knees and scanning my body with frantic, desperate hands to check for injuries.
"No," I breathed, trembling violently. "I'm... I'm okay. But Luca—"
"He's safe. They are all dead," Alessandro interrupted, his voice fiercely protective. He pulled both of us into his arms, burying his face in my hair. "I told you, Sophia. My world is dangerous. And now... because you were seen with us tonight, they know who you are."
My blood ran cold. The realization hit me like a physical blow.

By bringing me here, by dragging me into this subterranean fortress of blood and power, Alessandro hadn't just repaid a debt—he had painted a target on my back. My ordinary life, my cozy café, my quiet apartment on 72nd Street?
They were gone. Forever.
