Chapter 5 - The Ultimatum

Dawn broke over the Hudson, casting a pale, bruised light across the shattered glass of the underground penthouse. The bodies had been cleared away with terrifying efficiency by men in black suits who moved like ghosts.
I sat wrapped in one of Alessandro’s cashmere sweaters, staring out at the river with a cup of black coffee growing cold in my hands. Luca was finally asleep on a velvet sofa nearby, exhausted from the terror of the night.
Footsteps echoed softly behind me. Alessandro approached, setting a fresh cup of espresso on the table before pulling up a chair. He had changed into a clean black shirt, but the shadows under his eyes told the story of a man who never slept.
"You have a choice, Sophia," he said quietly, breaking the heavy silence.
I didn't look at him. "A choice? After what happened last night? What choice do I have? Your enemies think I'm tied to you. If I walk out those doors, I'm a dead woman walking."
"Precisely," Alessandro replied without a hint of apology. "If you go back to your apartment, to your café, the Moretti family will find you within twenty-four hours to use you as leverage against me. My men can protect you from a distance, but it won't be enough."
I finally turned my head, my eyes flashing with a mixture of fear and white-hot anger. "So what? You're keeping me here as a prisoner? Is that how a Russo expresses gratitude?"
"Not a prisoner," Alessandro corrected, leaning forward, his intense gaze locking onto mine. "A partner."
I let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "A partner? In what? The mob?"
"In survival," he said, his voice deadly serious. "And something more. You saved my son’s life with a few words of Italian and an open heart. But last night proved something else: when the world burned around you, you didn't break. You stood your ground. You have ice in your veins, Sophia, even if you didn't know it yet."
"I am a barista, Alessandro. Not a soldier."
"Not anymore," he countered softly. "Starting today, you stay by my side. Under my roof. Under my protection. And in return... I will give you a power and a life you couldn't even dream of. Or... you can walk out those doors right now, and I will give you a new passport, a new identity, and fly you to a safehouse in Zurich. You will never see us again."
Silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating. Zurich. Safety. An ordinary life.

It was everything I should have wanted.
So why, when I looked at Alessandro's unwavering, burning gaze, did the thought of walking away feel like the greatest tragedy of my life?
