Chapter 6 - The Headlines BreakForty-eight hours later, the ink was dry on a legally binding ironclad protection agreement, but the real storm was brewing seventy stories below.

Dylan sat behind his massive mahogany desk in his private home office, staring at his laptop screen. The glow of the monitor cast sharp, harsh shadows across his chiseled jaw.
Across the room, Mark stood rigidly by the floor-to-ceiling window, his face pale, clutching a tablet like it might explode.
"It’s already trending number one on Twitter, sir," Mark said, his voice tight with controlled panic. "The City Herald dropped the exclusive twenty minutes ago. And it’s syndicated across every major news network by now."
Dylan didn't look up from the screen. "Read it."
Mark cleared his throat, his eyes scanning the digital article.
“SLUM LORD OR SECRET SAVIOR? REAL ESTATE TYCOON DYLAN CARTER HARBORS IMPOVERISHED MOTHER AND CHILDREN IN LUXURY PENTHOUSE AMID ALLEGATIONS OF ABANDONMENT AND COERCION.”
Mark swallowed hard before continuing.
“Sources close to Arthur Vance, husband of local dry-cleaning worker Elena Vance, allege that billionaire developer Dylan Carter—owner of Carter Urban Holdings—used his vast financial influence to abduct a vulnerable mother and her two minor children from their modest home, sequestering them in his multi-million-dollar Pinnacle penthouse. Mr. Vance claims his wife is being held against her will under the heavy influence of medication, while the billionaire plays domestic savior for public relations gain...”
"Arthur," Dylan muttered, the name tasting like ash on his tongue.
"He sold the story to the highest bidder," Mark said, his voice trembling slightly. "Our PR team is working overtime, but the optics are a disaster, Mr. Carter. Carter Urban Holdings’ stock dropped 4.2% within ten minutes of the breaking news. The board is calling an emergency meeting for tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM. They are demanding an immediate press conference to distance the company from what they’re calling a 'reckless personal entanglement'."
Dylan finally closed the laptop. The sharp clack echoed through the silent office.
He stood up slowly, smoothing the front of his tailored shirt. He didn't look panicked, nor did he look angry. His face was carved from absolute ice—the exact expression he wore when a multi-million-dollar deal was on the line and his opponents thought they had him cornered.
"Let them call an emergency meeting," Dylan said smoothly. "Tell the board I won't be attending."
"Sir? You have to attend! If you miss a board meeting during a hostile media crisis, they can invoke clause 14 of the bylaws to strip you of your CEO voting rights!" Mark shouted, losing his corporate composure entirely.
"Let them try," Dylan replied coldly, walking past Mark toward the door. "Mark, do you know why I built Carter Urban Holdings from scratch?"
Mark blinked, taken aback by the sudden pivot. "Because... because you wanted to dominate the real estate market?"
"No," Dylan said, stopping at the doorway and looking back over his shoulder with eyes like polished steel. "I built it so that nobody could ever tell me who I can and cannot protect. If the board wants a war over a loaf of bread and a dying mother, they picked the wrong man to fight."
He stepped out of the office and walked down the hallway toward the guest suite.
As he approached the double doors, he heard voices inside. Laughter. Real, genuine laughter—high-pitched and light, belonging to Maya and Chloe.
Dylan pushed the door open slightly.
Elena was sitting propped up against a pile of plush feather pillows in the king-sized bed, looking significantly better after two days of proper nutrition and intravenous antibiotics. Her cheeks had a faint hint of color, and her eyes were bright as she played cards with her twin daughters scattered across the comforter.
When she saw Dylan standing in the doorway, the laughter died down. Her smile faded into a cautious, guarded expression.
She sent Maya and Chloe to the adjoining playroom, waiting until the heavy oak door clicked shut before looking up at him.
"You look like a man who just lost a billion dollars," Elena said quietly, her voice steady.
Dylan walked into the room, leaning against the foot of the bed. "More like four percent of a holding company. And a few nervous lawyers."
Elena’s gaze sharpened. "I saw the news on the bedroom TV, Dylan. Arthur went to the press, didn't he? He twisted everything. He made it look like... like you kidnapped us."
"He's a parasite looking for a payday," Dylan said flatly. "He thinks by dragging my name through the mud, I'll pay him off to make it go away. He doesn't understand that I don't negotiate with terrorists—and I certainly don't pay rats."
Elena looked down at her hands, twisting the edge of the blanket. A dark shadow crossed her face.
"He's going to destroy you," she whispered, her voice cracking with guilt. "You took us in out of pity, and now your company, your reputation, your entire life's work is burning down because of me and my girls. You should have just let us starve in that tenement, Mr. Carter."
Dylan reached out. Before she could pull away, his large, warm hand closed gently over her thin, bruised fingers.
Elena gasped softly, her dark eyes flying up to meet his.
"Listen to me, Elena," Dylan said, his voice low, intense, and carrying an absolute, unshakeable finality. "Ten years ago, nobody gave a damn about me. I built this empire with my bare hands, brick by brick, out of spite and survival. Do you really think a few sensationalist tabloid headlines and a pack of nervous board members are enough to make me turn my back on the first real thing I’ve ever cared about?"
May you like
Elena stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. The fortress she had built around her heart for years—the armor of a mother who had survived abandonment and poverty—suddenly fractured under the weight of his gaze.
Before either of them could speak, a deafening crash echoed from the private foyer outside the suite, followed by the sound of heavy boots stomping across the marble floor and a security alarm blaring through the penthouse.
