Chapter 7 - Breach in the FortressThe security alarm wailed through the Pinnacle’s penthouse like a banshee—a sharp, piercing shriek designed to alert local law enforcement and private security forces simultaneously.

Dylan dropped Elena’s hand instantly. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced in a split second by the cold, calculated predator who had survived the harshest boardrooms and the roughest foster homes.

"Stay here," Dylan commanded, his voice dropping an octave as he moved toward the bedroom door.

"Dylan, no!" Elena cried out, sitting bolt upright in bed, clutching the blanket to her chest. "It’s Arthur! He brought people with him! He’s unstable!"

"Good," Dylan said, his lips curling into a dangerous, razor-thin smile. "I was hoping he’d show up in person."

He stepped out into the hallway, pulling the door shut behind him to keep Maya and Chloe shielded in the guest suite.

As he walked down the expansive corridor toward the main foyer, the sounds grew louder. Shouting. The heavy thud of boots against expensive hardwood. The sound of porcelain shattering against marble.

When Dylan reached the edge of the grand foyer, the scene unfolding before him made his blood run cold.

There were four men standing in his pristine entryway.

Leading them was Arthur Vance, his face flushed with cheap gin and manic adrenaline, holding a heavy iron tire iron like a baseball bat. Flanking him were three rough-looking thugs—local loan sharks and low-level enforcers Arthur had clearly hired or promised a cut of the extortion money.

The security console by the double doors had been smashed to pieces, wires sparking and smoking against the white marble.

"Come on out, you billionaire coward!" Arthur screamed, swinging the tire iron wildly against a priceless modern art sculpture, sending shards of ceramic flying across the floor. "Where’s my wife? Where’s my money? You think you can lock my family up in your glass cage and play God? We’re taking them back, and we’re taking everything else not nailed down!"

One of the thugs, a massive man with a broken nose and cauliflower ears, cracked his knuckles, sneering at Dylan. "You heard the boss, fancy pants. Hand over the keys to the safe and tell the woman to pack her bags, or we’re going to turn this pretty little penthouse into a slaughterhouse."

Dylan didn't flinch. He didn't reach for a phone. He slowly unbuttoned the cuffs of his tailored shirt, folding them back neatly against his forearms with deliberate, terrifying calm.

"You broke my security console," Dylan said, his voice dangerously soft, cutting through the blaring alarm. "You shattered a piece of art that cost more than your combined criminal records. And you tracked mud onto my marble."

Arthur sneered, raising the tire iron. "What are you going to do, sue us? Call your fancy lawyers? They can't help you up here, Carter. It’s just you and us."

"You’re right," Dylan whispered.

In a flash of motion so fast it defied human reaction, Dylan didn't wait for them to charge. He closed the distance between them in three massive strides.

Before the cauliflower-eared thug could react, Dylan drove a devastating, bone-crushing right hook straight into the man's solar plexus. The thug let out a strangled, breathless shriek of agony, his eyes rolling back as his knees buckled, crashing hard onto the floor like a felled oak.

The other two enforcers froze in sheer terror.

Arthur’s face drained of color, his manic bravado evaporating in a single heartbeat. "Get him! What are you standing there for? Kill him!"

The second thug lunged forward with a switchblade, but Dylan sidestepped with lethal grace, catching the man's wrist, twisting it until a sickening pop echoed through the foyer, and driving his knee straight into the man's face. The enforcer collapsed unconscious into a heap of groaning limbs.

The third thug turned and bolted for the private elevator, but Dylan was faster. He grabbed the man by the collar of his jacket, hurled him across the foyer into the glass display case, shattering the custom glass into a thousand glittering diamonds.

Within thirty seconds, three hardened criminals were neutralized.

Dylan stood amidst the wreckage, his breathing controlled, his knuckles barely grazed. He slowly turned his cold, dead-fish eyes onto Arthur Vance.

Arthur dropped the tire iron. It hit the marble with a dull, heavy thud.

He staggered backward until his spine hit the locked elevator doors, his hands trembling violently as he stared at Dylan like he was staring straight into the gates of hell.

"P-Please," Arthur stammered, pissing himself slightly as a dark stain spread across his trousers. "I-I didn't mean it... it was a joke... Arthur was just—"

Dylan didn't let him finish. He grabbed Arthur by the throat with one hand, lifting the grown man six inches off the floor with effortless, terrifying strength. Arthur clawed desperately at Dylan’s wrist, choking, his face turning a deep, ugly shade of purple.

"Listen to me very carefully, Arthur," Dylan whispered, his face inches from the terrified man's eyes. "If you ever come within five miles of this building again—if you ever so much as mention Elena or those little girls’ names to a tabloid journalist or a living soul—I won't just ruin you. I will dismantle every miserable, pathetic atom of your existence until there is nothing left of you but a bad memory. Do you understand me?"

Arthur nodded frantically, tears streaming down his face, choking out a strangled, desperate gaspy sound.

Dylan opened his hand, letting Arthur drop like a sack of garbage onto the broken glass and spilled blood.

Before Arthur could crawl away, the private elevator doors suddenly dinged.

The doors slid open, revealing not police officers, but a terrifyingly calm, silver-haired woman in a sharp Chanel suit, flanked by two armed private security guards.

It was Victoria Sterling—the matriarch of Sterling Enterprises and the majority shareholder of Carter Urban Holdings.

She looked down at the unconscious thugs, then at Arthur whimpering on the floor, and finally up at Dylan, whose shirt sleeves were rolled up and whose knuckles were stained with blood.

"Well, Dylan," Victoria said, her voice dripping with a terrifying, glacial composure. "It seems the board meeting came to you."
