CHAPTER 7 — The Scholarship She Never Stopped Earning

Three days later...
Emma sat in the admissions office at Georgetown University.
She still couldn't believe she was there.
Nathan sat beside her.
Across the desk, Dean Margaret Collins smiled warmly.
"I've read your file three times."
Emma lowered her eyes.
"I'm sorry I declined the hardship assistance."
The dean shook her head.
"No."
"I'm sorry no one asked why."
She slid a new folder across the desk.
"This is your updated financial package."
Emma slowly opened it.
Then froze.
Full tuition.
Housing.
Books.
Health insurance.
Transportation.
Laptop.
Research stipend.
Emergency fund.
Summer internship guarantee.
Everything.
Every single expense.
Covered.
Emma stared silently at the papers.
"There has to be some mistake."
The dean smiled.
"There is."
"The mistake lasted eight months."
"It's been corrected."
Emma looked toward Nathan.
"I can't let you pay for this."
Nathan smiled gently.
"I'm not."
Emma blinked.
"What?"
Nathan turned another page.
The scholarship carried a different name.
The Grace Parker Foundation for First-Generation Scholars.
Emma frowned.
"My mother's name?"
Nathan nodded.
"I established the foundation yesterday."
"It won't just help you."
"It will help students who spend more time surviving than dreaming."
Emma's hands began shaking.
"You named it after my mom?"
Nathan looked toward Grace, who had just entered the office after her latest dialysis appointment.
"I've had buildings named after me."
"I've had awards named after me."
"They've never inspired anyone."
"But your mother already has."
Grace quietly wiped away tears.
Nathan continued.
"She taught me something I should have learned decades ago."
"The strongest people inside a company aren't always sitting in the boardroom."
Sometimes...
"They're quietly washing the coffee cups after everyone else goes home."
The room fell completely silent.
Even Dean Collins wiped away a tear.
Emma signed her acceptance papers.
The same dream she'd buried eight months earlier...
...finally became real.
But Nathan wasn't finished.
May you like
Because someone else still needed to face the truth.
His own son.
