CHAPTER 3 — The Brother Who Shouldn't Exist

The letter slipped from Ethan's trembling fingers.
It drifted slowly onto the cold concrete floor between them.
Neither man moved.
Neither spoke.
They simply stared.
Two identical faces.
Two lives that should have grown up together...
Separated by twenty-seven years of lies.
Finally, Ethan found his voice.
"...Who are you?"
The stranger's eyes remained cold.
"I told you."
He stepped closer.
"I'm your brother."
"My name is Noah."
The name hit Ethan like a freight train.
Noah.
The name had never appeared in family albums.
Never appeared on birth records.
Never been spoken inside the Calloway mansion.
As if he had never existed.
Yet standing before him...
There was no denying the truth.
The same blue eyes.
The same scar beneath the chin.
Even the same habit of clenching his jaw when angry.
The only difference...
Life had been kind to Ethan.
Life had declared war on Noah.
His leather jacket was worn.
His hands were covered with old scars.
His eyes carried the exhaustion of a man who had spent years surviving instead of living.
"You knew..." Ethan whispered.
"You knew I was alive?"
Noah laughed.
It wasn't joyful.
It was the sound of twenty-seven years of bitterness.
"I've known since I was sixteen."
Ethan stared.
"But I searched for you."
"No."
Noah interrupted sharply.
"You searched for a ghost."
"You hired investigators your father approved."
"You read files your father's lawyers prepared."
"You believed every lie they handed you."
Ethan couldn't answer.
Because Noah was right.
Every investigation...
Every police report...
Every missing-person record...
Had gone through Richard Calloway's company.
How had he never questioned that?
Noah bent down and picked up the cassette tape.
"There are three recordings."
"You've only heard the first."
"What about the others?"
"They're why they're hunting us."
Ethan frowned.
"'They?'"
Noah looked toward the station entrance.
"The people your father has been paying for decades."
Almost on cue...
Headlights flashed through the broken station windows.
Black SUVs.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then four.
Doors slammed.
Voices echoed.
"Split up!"
"Find the locker!"
"Don't let them leave!"
Ethan's heart pounded.
"They found us..."
Noah grabbed Ethan by the arm.
"No."
"They followed you."
They sprinted through the abandoned station.
Heavy footsteps thundered behind them.
Flashlights sliced through the darkness.
"THIS WAY!"
A gunshot exploded.
CRACK!
Concrete shattered beside Ethan's feet.
He froze.
"They're shooting?"
"They're not trying to arrest us," Noah shouted.
"They're trying to erase us."
They burst onto an empty subway platform.
An old maintenance train sat abandoned on the tracks.
Noah kicked open a rusted service door.
"Inside!"
The brothers climbed aboard seconds before armed men reached the platform.
Flashlights swept across the train.
Silence.
One guard frowned.
"They couldn't have disappeared."
Another spoke into his radio.
"Tell Mr. Calloway..."
"...the twins escaped."
Inside the dark maintenance car...
Ethan stared at Noah.
"Twins..."
"My entire life..."
"My father never told me."
Noah slowly reached into his backpack.
From a hidden compartment...
He removed a newspaper dated twenty-seven years earlier.
The headline made Ethan's blood run cold.
LOCAL WOMAN DIES IN MENTAL HOSPITAL FIRE
The accompanying photograph showed his mother.
Or at least...
The woman Ethan had been told was his mother.
"No..."
Ethan whispered.
"My father said she died."
Noah looked him straight in the eyes.
"That's another lie."
He flipped the newspaper over.
On the back...
Someone had written six words in red ink.
She walked out before the fire.
Ethan's hands began shaking again.
"If she survived..."
"Where is she?"
Noah's face hardened.
"I've spent fifteen years trying to answer that."
He pulled one final item from his backpack.
A faded photograph.
It showed a woman standing outside a small white church.
The picture had been taken only...
Three weeks ago.
Ethan's eyes widened.
"Impossible..."
The woman in the photograph wasn't dead.
She wasn't missing.
She was alive.
And she had been watching her sons from the shadows all along.
