CHAPTER 4 — The Mother Who Refused to Die

The encrypted message glowed in the darkness.

"She's been captured. Come alone... or she'll die for real this time."

No sender.

No location.

No explanation.

Only a countdown.

59:59

One hour.

Noah's face lost every trace of color.

He whispered only one word.

"No..."

Ethan grabbed his arm.

"What is it?"

Noah locked his phone and shoved it into his pocket.

"You weren't supposed to be involved."

"What does that mean?"

"It means they finally found her."

Silence.

The abandoned maintenance train rattled gently as the brothers stared at each other.

For twenty-seven years...

One had searched for answers.

The other had searched for success.

Neither realized they had both been running from the same enemy.

"Tell me everything," Ethan demanded.

Noah took a long breath.

"Our mother never disappeared."

"She spent years hiding."

"Changing names."

"Changing cities."

"Never staying anywhere longer than a few weeks."

"Why?"

"Because Richard never stopped hunting her."

Ethan felt his stomach tighten.

"My own father..."

Noah interrupted.

"Richard isn't afraid she'll expose an affair."

"He's afraid she'll expose a crime."

Noah opened the second cassette.

Static crackled.

Then...

A woman's exhausted voice filled the train.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...they've probably found me again."

"I'm sorry, my boys."

"I wanted to raise both of you."

"But Richard discovered something the night you were born."

A pause.

Soft sobbing.

Then...

"The doctor told him you weren't just twins."

"You were heirs."

"He inherited billions from your grandfather..."

"...only if both sons survived."

Ethan frowned.

"What?"

Noah nodded slowly.

"The family fortune."

"It wasn't supposed to belong to Richard."

"It belonged equally to us."

Another long pause on the tape.

Then their mother's voice became almost impossible to recognize.

"So Richard sold one son..."

"...and kept the other."

"...because one heir is easier to control than two."

Ethan couldn't breathe.

"No..."

"No father could..."

Noah looked away.

"You still don't understand who Richard Calloway really is."

Suddenly...

The train lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then...

Complete darkness.

Every emergency light died at the same time.

Noah froze.

"They cut the power."

Footsteps echoed outside.

Heavy.

Slow.

Disciplined.

Not police.

Professionals.

A laser sight suddenly appeared on the train wall.

Then another.

Then another.

Red dots danced across Ethan's chest.

A deep voice echoed through the darkness.

"Mr. Calloway..."

"You have ten seconds."

"Hand over the recordings."

"We only need your brother."

Ethan stepped in front of Noah.

"No."

The voice laughed.

"You still think this is about money?"

A flashlight switched on.

Standing outside the train...

Were twelve armed men dressed entirely in black.

At their center stood a familiar figure.

Richard Calloway.

Perfect suit.

Perfect smile.

Not a single emotion crossed his face.

He slowly applauded.

"Congratulations, Ethan."

"You finally met your brother."

Ethan's voice trembled with rage.

"You sold your own son?"

Richard smiled.

"No."

"I invested him."

The words echoed through the station.

Even Noah looked shocked.

Richard continued calmly.

"You see..."

"One son became a billionaire."

"The other became a survivor."

"I wanted to know which was stronger."

Ethan felt sick.

"You destroyed our lives..."

Richard shrugged.

"And yet..."

"Here you both are."

"Exactly where I wanted you."

Then Richard looked at his watch.

"Unfortunately..."

"Our reunion is over."

He raised one hand.

Every rifle pointed directly at the brothers.

"Take Noah."

"If Ethan resists..."

"Shoot him too."

The armed men charged forward.

Noah shoved Ethan toward the rear emergency exit.

"RUN!"

"But you—"

"NOW!"

Gunfire exploded through the train.

Glass shattered.

Metal screamed.

The brothers sprinted in opposite directions.

Ethan dove through the emergency hatch just before bullets tore through the carriage behind him.

He rolled down a steep maintenance tunnel.

His shoulder slammed into concrete.

The cassette tapes scattered across the ground.

One broke open.

Inside...

Instead of magnetic tape...

A tiny silver USB drive slid across the floor.

Ethan picked it up.

Confused.

"Noah..."

Before he could call out...

A loud explosion shook the tunnel.

Dust filled the air.

The ceiling collapsed behind him.

The passage back to Noah disappeared beneath tons of concrete.

Ethan screamed his brother's name.

No answer.

Only silence.

Then...

His phone vibrated.

A live video call from an unknown number.

Hands shaking, he answered.

The screen lit up.

His mother was tied to a chair.

Bruised.

Bleeding.

But alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Ethan..."

Before she could say another word...

A masked man stepped into frame.

He removed his gloves...

Then slowly removed his mask.

Ethan's blood turned to ice.

It wasn't one of Richard's bodyguards.

It wasn't one of his executives.

It was...

Richard Calloway's younger brother.

The uncle Ethan had attended family holidays with his entire life.

Smiling at the camera, the man whispered:

"You've been looking for the wrong monster."

The video instantly went black.

End of Chapter 4

Cliffhanger: Ethan escapes with the mysterious USB drive, believing Noah has been buried alive. But as he plugs the drive into his laptop, one hidden folder appears with a terrifying title:
