Chapter 4 - The Silent Witness — Hunting for the Woman Whose Escape Cost Everything

The elevator doors to the penthouse foyer didn't slide open—they were blown off their tracks.

A flashbang grenade detonated in the lobby, filling the air with blinding white light and a deafening roar. Ethan, acting on pure survival instinct, threw himself over Lily, shielding her small body with his own as shattered glass rained down like winter ice.

"Go! Go!" a gruff voice shouted through the smoke.

Tactical mercenaries, clad in unmarked black gear and carrying suppressed automatic rifles, poured into the penthouse. They weren't police. They were a private clean-up crew, sent by Gerald Whitmore to retrieve the asset.

But Ethan Cole was not an ordinary billionaire. He had built his empire in the cutthroat energy sectors of Eastern Europe and Asia, surviving three assassination attempts before he was thirty. His penthouse was a fortress.

"Evelyn! Safe room! Now!" Ethan roared, scooping Lily into his arms.

He kicked his heavy mahogany coffee table upward, creating a temporary shield against a hail of suppressed bullets. Dr. Vance grabbed the laptop containing Arthur's file and ran toward the reinforced steel door at the back of the hallway.

Ethan’s personal security team, led by a battle-hardened former Special Forces operative named Jaxx, emerged from the side doors, returning fire with lethal precision. The penthouse turned into a warzone.

Ethan slipped into the safe room just as a bullet chipped the plaster inches from his head. He slammed the heavy steel door shut, locking the pneumatic bolts.

The sound of gunfire outside became a distant, muffled thudding.

Inside the dimly lit safe room, Lily was trembling, her eyes wide with terror, but true to her survival instinct, she didn't make a sound. She simply clutched Ethan’s collar, her tiny fingernails digging into his skin.

"It's okay, sweetheart. I've got you," Ethan whispered, his heart breaking for the sheer trauma this tiny girl had endured.

"Mr. Cole," Jaxx’s voice crackled over the secure intercom. "The sweep is clear. We neutralized three of them. The rest fled. But they weren't trying to kill us. They were trying to capture the girl."

"Did we capture any of them alive?" Ethan demanded.

"One," Jaxx replied. "He's bleeding out, but he can talk."

Ethan didn't hesitate. He handed Lily to Dr. Vance. "Keep her safe. Evelyn, come with me."

In the ruined lobby, a wounded mercenary lay slumped against the wall, his black mask torn off to reveal a rugged, sweating face. Ethan walked up to him, his expression colder than a Chicago blizzard. He didn't ask questions. He simply stepped on the man’s shattered collarbone.

The mercenary screamed.

"Who sent you?" Ethan asked, his voice flat.

"Go to hell, Cole," the man spat, blood bubbling on his lips. "You don't know what you're dealing with. The Whitmores aren't the only ones who want that kid. There's a buyer... a foreign syndicate. They already have the mother."

Ethan froze. He pressed his foot down harder. "Mei Lin is alive?"

"For now," the mercenary wheezed, his eyes rolling back. "They're keeping her in an abandoned industrial dock in the Port of Chicago. They’re using her to figure out how to extract the serum from the girl's blood without killing the host. If you don't bring the girl to them by midnight... they’re going to dump the mother in the lake."

Ethan stepped back, his eyes burning with a dark, vengeful fire.

"Jaxx," Ethan said, wiping a speck of blood off his leather shoe. "Prep the chopper. We’re going to the docks. And bring every weapon we have."
