Chapter 5 - The Lion’s Den — How a 3-Year-Old Exposed a Nationwide Conspiracy

By 10:00 PM, the storm over Chicago had escalated into a full-blown gale. Heavy rain lashed against the rusted corrugated metal of Warehouse 14 at the edge of the city’s industrial shipping docks.

Inside, tied to a wooden chair under a single, flickering halogen bulb, was Mei Lin. Her face was bruised, her clothes torn, but her eyes remained fierce and defiant.

Standing in front of her was Gerald Whitmore, accompanied by a tall, elegant man in a tailored gray suit—Julian Vance, the estranged brother of Ethan’s doctor, and the lead bio-engineer for the syndicate.

"Where is the key, Mei?" Gerald demanded, slapping her across the face. "Arthur left a physical encryption key. We know he gave it to you before he died. Without it, we can't map the gene sequence we took from Lily's blood."

Mei Lin spat blood onto Gerald’s polished shoes. "You will never get it. Arthur died to keep our daughter safe from monsters like you."

"Your daughter is currently in the hands of Ethan Cole," Julian Vance said smoothly, checking his gold watch. "And knowing Ethan’s predictable sense of heroic duty, he is currently walking straight into our trap."

Right on cue, the heavy steel doors of the warehouse groaned open.

The wind and rain swept inside, carrying the silhouette of a single man.

It was Ethan. He was alone, dressed in a long black overcoat, carrying a small, blanket-wrapped bundle in his arms.

"Ethan!" Mei Lin screamed, her voice cracking. "No! Don't give her to them!"

Gerald let out a triumphant laugh. "I knew you’d come, Ethan! You always were sentimental. Your brother’s weakness was his family, and it seems you share the exact same flaw."

Ethan walked slowly into the center of the warehouse, stopping twenty feet away from them. He looked down at the bundle in his arms, then up at Gerald.

"I brought what you wanted," Ethan said, his voice echoing in the vast, hollow space. "But I want to hear it from your own mouth, Gerald. You killed Arthur. You staged the crash."

"Of course I did!" Gerald scoffed, drunk on the illusion of his impending victory. "Your brother was a fool! He wanted to give away a multi-billion-dollar medical breakthrough to public charities. He wanted to cure pediatric diseases for free! Do you have any idea how much power we hold with this serum? We can control the lives of the wealthiest people on Earth. We can decide who lives and who dies!"

"And Lily?" Ethan asked, his voice dangerously low. "She’s a baby. You kept her in a basement."

"She was an investment," Gerald sneered. "A biological vault. We needed to keep her safe and isolated until we had the technology to extract the serum. Now, hand her over, Ethan. Or both you and this useless woman die tonight."

Ethan stood perfectly still for a three-second silence. Then, a slow, terrifying smile spread across his face.

"Thank you, Gerald," Ethan said.

"Thank you?" Gerald frowned, confused. "For what?"

Ethan pulled back the blanket of the bundle in his arms.

It wasn't Lily. It was a high-definition, military-grade field camera mounted to a thermal decoy doll, its lens glowing a bright, ominous blue.

"For the confession," Ethan said.

Suddenly, every television screen, tablet, and smartphone in the warehouse—and across the entire United States—flashed to life.
