Chapter 2 - The Snake in the Boardroom

Hook: The ultimate betrayal doesn’t come from your enemies—it comes from the person holding your pen.

The next morning, the top floor of the Vanderbilt Tower was engulfed in a tense storm.

Chloe sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, still dressed simply, contrasting sharply with the older men in bespoke Italian suits. Across from her sat Julian Vance, her biological uncle and the vice-chairman of the company. He had a smug, oily grin on his face.

"You're late, Chloe," Julian purred, tapping a thick manila folder. "But I suppose running around pretending to be a commoner takes up a lot of your time."

"Cut the act, Julian," Chloe replied, leaning back. "You called an emergency board meeting without my authorization. What is this?"

Julian signaled the projector screen. Documents flashed before the board members—records of massive, illegal offshore transfers bearing Chloe's digital signature. Millions of dollars siphoned from the VIGP jewelry division into anonymous accounts in the Cayman Islands.

"Embezzlement, Chloe," Julian declared, his voice booming with fake righteousness. "You have been mismanaging the family legacy. The board has voted. We are stripping you of your CEO title, froze your personal assets, and effective today, you are being removed from the Vanderbilt estate."

Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her face remained a mask of stone. She looked around the room. The board members—men who had sworn loyalty to her late father—all looked away, avoiding her gaze. They had been bought out.

Suddenly, the heavy doors of the boardroom burst open.

In walked Vanessa, wearing a triumphant grin, accompanied by a team of high-profile lawyers.

"Surprise, Chloe!" Vanessa laughed, walking into the room as if she owned it. "Did you really think I'd let you ruin my husband's life yesterday? Julian and I have been working together for months. My husband’s real estate company was just a front to help Julian move the funds you're being accused of stealing!"

Vanessa walked right up to Chloe, leaning over the table, her eyes venomous. "You humiliated me in front of the world yesterday. Today, I take everything you have. The jewelry store, this tower, and your precious name. You’re nothing but a fraud."

Chloe looked at the signature on the screen. It was an exact replica of her own. She had been framed flawlessly.

"Donald," Chloe called out through her earpiece. "Lock down the VIGP branch. Don't let anyone—"

"Manager Donald doesn't work for you anymore, niece," Julian interrupted, tossing a termination letter across the table. "He was fired an hour ago. You have thirty minutes to clear out your desk. You're broke."
