Chapter 3 - The Snake in the Shadow

Hook: The wheelchair kick wasn't an accident—it was a coordinated assassination attempt from inside her own bloodline.
The hotel manager, a man named Henderson who had prided himself on managing the most exclusive establishment in the country, fell to his knees so fast his kneecaps made a sickening crack against the marble.
"M-Madam Permone! I swear to you, I had nothing to do with it!" Henderson cried, his hands raised in supplication. "The wheelchair... it was brought in by your own personal medical transport! We didn't touch it!"
Seraphina didn't look surprised. She dragged her fingers along the bent metal rim of her wheel. "Marcus, look at the left axle."
Marcus Vance bent down, examining the mechanism beneath the seat. His eyes narrowed as he spotted a tiny, micro-engineered pin that had been partially sheared through. It wasn't broken by Victoria's kick; Victoria’s kick had merely triggered the final collapse of a structure that had been precisely sliced with a laser-cutter.
"If you had been traveling at your usual speed down the hotel's concrete ramp, Madam..." Marcus whispered, a cold sweat breaking out on his neck. "The axle would have snapped entirely. You would have been thrown into oncoming traffic on the main avenue."
"Precisely," Seraphina murmured. "Victoria Sterling was a loud, arrogant idiot. A useful distraction. Whoever cut this pin knew my schedule. They knew I would be entering through the side lobby tonight without my full detail."
She looked up at the glittering crystal chandelier hanging a hundred feet above them. The hotel lobby was silent, save for the murmurs of the elite guests who were trying to slip away unnoticed.
"Lock down the building," Seraphina ordered calmly. "No one leaves. If a single soul attempts to exit through a window, a fire escape, or a sewer line... shoot them."
"Understood," Marcus barked into his earpiece. Within seconds, the heavy titanium security shutters of the Grand Imperial Hotel slammed down, sealing everyone inside. The luxury prison was now locked.
Seraphina leaned back in her broken chair, looking completely at ease despite the chaos. "Henderson."
"Y-Yes, Madam?" the manager whimpered.
"Who authorized the VIP clearance for Victoria Sterling's charity gala tonight? This hotel requires a three-month vetting process for private events. The Sterlings didn't have that kind of leverage."
Henderson swallowed hard, looking terrified. "It... it came from the top, Madam. The authorization bypass code was entered from a high-level executive account within the Permone Corporation itself."
"Give me the name," Seraphina demanded.
"I don't have the name! I swear!" Henderson cried, trembling. "It was an encrypted digital signature! But... but I recognized the routing protocol. It was the 'Giddeon' protocol."
The air in the room seemed to vanish. Marcus looked at Seraphina, his face pale.
Giddeon Permone. Seraphina’s elder half-brother. The man who had supposedly spent the last three years weeping over her "paralysis" and managing the family's European shipping assets. The man who had convinced the board of directors that Seraphina was too fragile to hold the title of Sovereign.
"So, my dear brother couldn't wait for the poison to work, so he decided to try a more mechanical approach," Seraphina said softly. A dark, amused smile played on her lips. "He wanted me dead in a tragic 'accident' right here in the heart of the city he wants to claim."
Suddenly, a loud explosion rocked the upper floors of the hotel. The lights flickered and died, plunging the entire grand lobby into absolute darkness.

Screams echoed through the dark.
"Madam!" Marcus yelled, drawing his weapon. But before he could reach her, the sound of heavy automatic gunfire erupted from the mezzanine level above them. A strike team was already inside.
