CHAPTER 2 — "The Photograph That Destroyed Twenty-Two Years of Lies"

Edward could no longer hear the applause.
The music had ended.
But inside his mind, another melody had begun.
The melody Amelia used to play every rainy evening on the porch of their tiny apartment before success changed everything.
His hands shook uncontrollably.
"Who made that flute?" he asked.
The boy looked confused.
"My mother."
"What is her name?"
The child hesitated.
"Amelia."
The world stopped.
Several guests laughed nervously.
Surely it was coincidence.
Edward refused to blink.
"Amelia... what?"
The boy swallowed.
"Amelia Brooks."
The billionaire staggered backward as if someone had punched him.
Brooks.
Her maiden name.
Impossible.
She had vanished before ever taking his last name.
Only three people had known that detail.
Edward.
Amelia.
And the lawyer who had prepared their marriage papers.
No one else.
The guests watched in stunned silence.
Edward slowly approached the child.
His usually commanding voice had become fragile.
"Where is your mother?"
"In our apartment."
"She's very sick."
"The doctors said she won't survive much longer without surgery."
Edward knelt until they were eye level.
"When did you meet me before today?"
"I never did."
"My mom only said... if she couldn't wake up one day... I should bring you this."
The boy reached into the pocket of his worn jacket.
Inside was a faded photograph wrapped carefully in plastic to protect it from rain.
He handed it over with both hands.
Edward unfolded it.
The air left his lungs.
It showed two young people laughing beneath an old oak tree.
A twenty-five-year-old Edward.
A beautiful Amelia.
And between them...
An unfinished wooden flute resting across both of their hands.
Written on the back in Amelia's handwriting were six words.
For the family we'll build together.
Edward nearly collapsed.
His knees buckled.
One tear landed on the faded photograph.
Then another.
The guests stared in disbelief.
None of them had ever seen the ruthless billionaire cry.
Not when markets crashed.
Not when competitors betrayed him.
Not even when his own brother died.
But now...
He couldn't stop.
A terrible realization crashed into him.
He counted the years.
Twenty-two.
He looked at the boy.
Ten years old.
The math didn't make sense.
Unless...
Amelia had disappeared long after someone wanted him to believe she was gone.
Someone had lied.
For years.
Someone had hidden her.
Someone had stolen an entire future.
Before Edward could ask another question, the boy suddenly swayed.
His face turned ghostly white.
He hadn't eaten since yesterday.
He collapsed onto the marble floor.
Guests screamed.
Doctors rushed forward.
Edward caught the child before his head struck the ground.
The boy weakly grabbed Edward's sleeve.
"Please..."
"Don't save me first..."
"Save my mom..."
Then he lost consciousness.
Edward looked at the unconscious child in his arms before turning toward his chief of security.
For the first time in decades, the billionaire's voice thundered with unstoppable fury.
"Find Amelia Brooks."
"I don't care if every private jet in my company has to leave tonight."
"I don't care what it costs."
"Search every hospital."
"Every clinic."
"Every shelter."
"Every town."
"And if anyone kept her away from me..."
His eyes burned with quiet rage.
"They didn't just steal the woman I loved."
"They stole twenty-two years of our lives."
What Edward didn't know...
Was that only a few miles away, in a dark hospital room, Amelia had just whispered one final sentence before losing consciousness forever.

"Please don't let him find out...
...who really separated us."
