CHAPTER 2 ā The Secret Vault Beneath the Auction House

The next morning, Julian canceled every meeting.
His board of directors thought he had lost his mind.
Billion-dollar negotiations waited.
International investors landed by private jet.
Three ministers were expecting lunch.
Julian ignored all of them.
Instead...
He drove straight to the city's oldest auction house.
He carried only one thing.
A printed photograph of Lila.
The elderly receptionist froze.
"I know her," she whispered.
Julian immediately demanded,
"Take me to whoever handled The Silent Echo."
Her face became frightened.
"Mr. Rowan retired fifteen years ago."
"Where is he?"
"I don't know."
"You do."
Minutes later...
An address slid across the desk.
A forgotten cottage near the coast.
When Julian arrived...
The old gallery agent was already waiting.
Rowan looked as though he'd been expecting this visit for years.
"You finally found her."
Julian slammed the photograph onto the table.
"Tell me the truth."
Rowan stared at Lila's face.
Then quietly closed his eyes.
"I've been waiting twenty years to confess."
Julian felt something cold settle inside his chest.
Rowan opened an old wooden chest.
Inside were yellowed contracts...
Receipts...
Letters...
And dozens of photographs.
Then...
One canvas.
Unfinished.
Signed.
LILA THORNE.
Julian's breathing stopped.
Rowan spoke softly.
"I never intended to steal from her."
"You did."
"I know."
"The day she brought me The Silent Echo..."
Rowan looked toward the window.
"...she hadn't eaten in three days."
"She apologized for crying because tears kept dripping onto the canvas."
"She asked only one question."
Julian swallowed.
"What question?"
"'Will this pay for my father's funeral?'"
Silence.
"I paid her five hundred dollars."
Julian stared at him.
"Five hundred?"
Rowan nodded.
"It sold six months later for two million."
Then...
Twenty million.
Then...
Forty-eight million.
Eventually...
One hundred and twenty million.
Julian slowly realized the horrifying truth.
The entire international art market...
The museums...
The auction houses...
The documentaries...
The books...
Everything...
Had been built upon one enormous lie.
Rowan handed Julian one final envelope.
"You should read this."
Inside...
Was Lila's handwritten notebook.
Age sixteen.
Every page documented the creation of The Silent Echo.
Paint formulas.
Color recipes.
Sketches.
Corrections.
Even fingerprints preserved in dried pigment.
It wasn't just proof.
It was absolute proof.
Julian whispered,
"We have to give it back."
Rowan sadly smiled.
"You still don't understand."
"Understand what?"
"The painting was never the thing she wanted back."
Meanwhile...
Across the city...
Lila quietly resigned from her cleaning job.
No interviews.
No lawyers.
No television.
She packed her small apartment.
One suitcase.
One easel.
A handful of brushes.
Nothing else.
She intended to disappear again.
Until someone knocked.
Outside stood nearly forty journalists.
Behind them...
Luxury cars.
Museum directors.
Auction executives.
Collectors.
Everyone suddenly wanted the woman they had ignored yesterday.
Only one person arrived empty-handed.
Julian.
He removed his expensive watch.
Placed it on her doorstep.
And said,
"I don't deserve five minutes of your time."
Lila looked at him.
"What do you want?"
Julian lowered his head.
"To fix what my world destroyed."
Lila answered quietly.
"You can't."
Then she closed the door.
But that night...
Someone broke into Rowan's cottage.
The evidence vanished.
The contracts disappeared.
And Rowan himself...
Was gone.
Only one message remained.
May you like
Painted across the wall in dark blue.
SHE MUST NEVER BE BELIEVED.
