CHAPTER 5 — The Kidnapping That Was Never About Money

The music box was still turning.
One broken note.
Then another.
Its haunting melody echoed through the shattered entrance hall while smoke drifted through broken stained-glass windows.
Roman Blackwood didn't see the blood on his hands.
He didn't hear the guards shouting.
He saw only one thing.
Amelia was gone.
His daughter had vanished.
"LOCK THE ESTATE!" Roman roared.
"No one leaves! Search every room!"
More than sixty armed guards flooded the mansion.
Every hallway.
Every hidden passage.
Every guest suite.
Nothing.
It was as if the little girl had disappeared into thin air.
Then Noah bent down beside the music box.
He didn't touch it immediately.
Instead, he listened.
Tick...
Tick...
Tick...
"The song is wrong," he whispered.
Roman stared at him.
"What?"
"This isn't Amelia's music box."
Everyone frowned.
Noah slowly turned it over.
The crack was identical.
The paint looked the same.
But inside...
Instead of the tiny hidden compartment...
...there was a folded piece of paper.
Roman unfolded it with trembling fingers.
Seven handwritten words.
YOU SAVED THE WRONG WOMAN. FIND THE TRUTH.
Roman looked up.
Celeste had planned everything.
The crash.
The distraction.
The kidnapping.
She had expected them to rescue Clara first.
Noah suddenly remembered something.
"My mom..."
He sprinted toward the medical room.
Clara was trying desperately to sit up.
"Noah..."
"The attic..."
Roman leaned closer.
"What attic?"
"The chapel attic..."
"The old chapel behind the greenhouse..."
"I heard Celeste talking there..."
"She said..."
Clara burst into painful coughing.
"...that the child must never remember..."
Roman didn't wait another second.
"Everyone with me!"
Rain hammered the estate as dozens of black SUVs raced toward the abandoned stone chapel at the edge of the property.
The building had been closed for years.
Vines covered its walls.
The wooden cross leaned sideways.
When Roman kicked open the front door...
The chapel was empty.
Dust covered every pew.
Broken candles littered the floor.
"No one's here," a guard whispered.
Noah ignored them.
He looked upward.
"The attic."
A narrow staircase creaked beneath their feet.
The air smelled of mold and old wood.
Halfway up...
They heard crying.
Very soft.
Roman froze.
"Amelia?"
No answer.
He climbed faster.
At the top, they found a tiny locked room.
A guard smashed the door open.
Inside...
Amelia sat alone on an old mattress.
She wasn't tied up.
She wasn't injured.
She was simply staring at a faded family photograph hanging on the wall.
Roman rushed to hug her.
"You're safe..."
But Amelia didn't hug him back.
She kept staring at the photograph.
"Daddy..."
Her voice was barely audible.
"That's not Mommy."
Roman slowly looked at the picture.
It showed Evelyn...
standing beside a smiling woman.
The same woman Noah had called his mother.
Clara.
Behind them stood two toddlers.
One was Amelia.
The other...
Roman's heart nearly stopped.
...was Noah.
Both children wore matching silver lockets.
Roman whispered,
"What is this?"
Clara, who had just been brought into the room by paramedics, closed her eyes.
"It's time."
Roman turned toward her.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Tears rolled down Clara's face.
"Evelyn didn't have one child."
Roman stared in disbelief.
"She had..."
"...twins."
The room fell silent.
Roman looked from Amelia...
...to Noah.
His hands began shaking uncontrollably.
"No..."
Clara nodded.
May you like
"The night Evelyn died..."
"...someone stole her son."
