Chapter 4 - The Midnight Breach

The moonlight cut through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the study, casting long, skeletal shadows across the Persian rug.

Kevin grabbed a heavy brass paperweight from his desk, his knuckles turning white. "How many?" he asked, his voice low and steady.

"Just one professional," Anna murmured, drawing a sleek, black Glock 19 from a hidden holster beneath her gray sweater with fluid, practiced ease. "Marcus doesn't like to leave loose ends. When he saw my name pop up on the security logs of the employment agency this morning, he realized someone was digging into the domestic staff payroll. He sent a cleaner."

"A cleaner?" Kevin scoffed bitterly. "In my own house?"

"Quiet," Anna hissed, raising a hand.

Outside in the rose garden, the gravel crunched under the weight of heavy boots. Crunch. Crunch. Pause.

The intruder wasn't trying to hide. They knew the estate's guard rotation better than the private security guards Kevin paid fifty thousand dollars a month to manage.

Click.

The lock on the French doors turned with a dull metallic click. The heavy glass door slid open an inch, letting in a draft of cold, damp autumn air that smelled of wet earth and dead leaves.

Kevin stepped toward the darkness of the hallway, but Anna caught his sleeve, yanking him behind the massive mahogany desk.

"Stay down," she whispered fiercely. "If you make a sound, they’ll kill you before you reach the stairs."

A figure stepped through the sliding doors.

He wore a dark tactical turtleneck, black cargo pants, and thick rubber-soled boots. In his right hand, he carried a suppressed Beretta 9mm. His face was hidden behind a black neoprene balaclava, leaving only two cold, calculating eyes visible in the moonlight.

The intruder moved with silent, predatory efficiency. He didn't check the bookshelves. He didn't look at the computer monitors. He walked straight toward the private elevator that led up to the second-floor master suite and the children's rooms.

He’s going for the boys, Kevin realized, his maternal instinct—and a primal, terrifying paternal fury—overriding his fear.

Before Anna could stop him, Kevin lunged from behind the desk, hurling the heavy brass paperweight straight at the intruder's head.

The missile missed the man's skull by an inch, shattering a glass display case filled with vintage corporate memorabilia. Shards of crystal rained down across the floor.

The intruder spun around instantly, raising the suppressed pistol with terrifying speed.

Bang.

A muffled thud echoed through the study as a bullet drilled a hole through the leather back of Kevin’s desk chair, sending stuffing flying into the air.

Before the intruder could adjust his aim for a second shot, Anna stepped out from the shadows.

Bang. Bang.

Two precise, controlled shots rang out. The first bullet struck the intruder’s right shoulder, spinning him around. The second clipped his knee, sending him crashing hard onto the marble floor, his weapon clattering away across the polished stones.

Anna was on top of him in a second, her knee planted firmly between his shoulder blades, her pistol pressed directly against the base of his skull.

"Don't move or I’ll blow your spine through your teeth," Anna barked, her voice cold as ice.

The masked man groaned, blood pooling beneath his black tactical gear.

Kevin walked over slowly, his chest heaving. He reached down, grabbed the edge of the neoprene balaclava, and ripped it off in one violent motion.

Kevin stared down into the pale, sweating face of David Cole—head of corporate security for Morrison Dynamics and Marcus Vance’s right-hand man.

"David," Kevin whispered, the betrayal tasting like ash in his mouth. "You ran my security team for eight years."

David coughed up a fleck of blood, a grim, bloody smile spreading across his lips. "You... you think you’re so smart, Kevin," he wheezed. "You think you found everything on Lauren’s hard drive? Marcus is already on a private jet to Zurich. And by sunrise... Morrison Dynamics won't be yours anymore."
