Chapter 3 - The Velvet Pouch and the Poisoned GiftThe heavy velvet pouch sat between them on the scarred wooden counter, radiating an aura of dangerous significance. Master Chen didn't reach for it. Instead, his cloudy eyes shifted from the pouch up to Maya Vance’s flawless, impassive face.

"Wealth doesn't change who you are, child," Chen said, his voice raspy but steady. "It only magnifies it. What kind of war brings a billionaire to a dying noodle shop in the slums?"
Maya’s gaze flickered with a sudden, cold intensity that could have shattered glass. She reached out, unfastened the golden drawstring of the pouch, and tipped it upside down.
Out tumbled three items.
The first was a heavily worn, discolored one-dollar coin and two greasy fifty-cent pieces—the exact three coins she had slid across this counter a decade and a half ago. The second was a solid platinum key encrusted with a single, blood-red ruby. And the third was a thick, legal-sized dossier bound in black calfskin leather, embossed with a silver emblem of a coiled viper wrapped around a sword.
"Those three coins," Maya whispered, her voice dropping to a low, hypnotic register, "were the only things my mother left me before she died of exposure in the alley behind this block. When I walked in here, I was plotting how to burn this entire district to the ground out of pure hatred."
She leaned forward, resting her palms on the counter, closing the distance between them.
"Your bowl of soup didn't just warm my stomach, Master Chen. It reminded me that humanity hadn't entirely rotted away. It gave me the fraction of a second I needed to choose survival over destruction. With those three coins still in my pocket, I crawled out of the gutter. I built Vance Global from the blood, sweat, and tears of someone who had nothing left to lose."
Chen swallowed hard. "Then why the war? If you own half the skyline outside, why come back to this miserable street?"
"Because," Maya replied, her lips curling into a predatory smile, "the men who threw my mother out into the freezing rain? The men who stole my family's estate, left us to starve, and built their corporate fortunes on our graves? They are the same board of directors currently trying to bulldoze your shop."
She tapped her long, manicured nail against the black leather dossier.
"Vance Global isn't just a real estate conglomerate, Master Chen. It is a machine built for one single purpose: absolute, total annihilation of the elite class that preyed on the weak. And tonight... the first domino falls."
Before Chen could process the sheer magnitude of her words, the brass bell above the door chimed again.
This time, the door was thrown open with violent force. Three men strode into the shop, their expensive Italian wool suits contrasting sharply with the humble surroundings. Leading them was Director Vance—no relation to Maya, but rather the ruthless, bloated CEO of Vance Real Estate Development, the very man who had been trying to seize Chen’s land. Behind him stood his corporate legal counsel and a burly private security enforcer.
Director Vance didn't even notice Maya standing in the shadows of the dim lighting. He marched straight up to the counter, his face purple with rage, pointing a thick, diamond-ringed finger right in Chen’s face.
"You stubborn old fool!" Vance bellowed, his voice echoing off the tiled walls. "I sent my inspector here with an offer! Fifty thousand dollars was a charity! As of midnight, your lease is revoked by municipal decree, your water is cut, and if you aren't out by morning, I'll have the marshals drag you into the street and bulldoze this shack with you inside it!"
Chen didn't flinch. He didn't even blink. He simply turned his head slightly and looked toward Maya.
Director Vance finally followed the old man's gaze. For the first time, he noticed the woman standing in the shadows, draped in haute couture, her expression like carved marble.
Vance’s eyes widened. As the CEO of a rival real estate firm, he recognized the silhouette of the most feared, untouchable titan in the financial world—the mysterious reclusive founder and majority shareholder of Vance Global Holdings, a woman the tabloids called The Black Widow.
"M... Madam Vance?" Vance stammered, his color instantly draining from purple to a sickly, pasty white. "What... what are you doing in a wretched place like this?"
May you like
Maya slowly turned around. She didn't look like a successful businesswoman; she looked like an executioner stepping up to the guillotine.
"Director Vance," Maya said, her voice dripping with an icy, lethal sweetness. "It's so wonderful to finally meet the man who taught me my first lesson in cruelty."
