Chapter 16 - The Empire ExpandsSix Months Later.

The New York skyline glittered under a crisp, autumn twilight.

From the floor-to-ceiling windows of the newly renovated Rinaldi Global headquarters in Manhattan, Serena looked out over the city. But this time, she wasn't looking down with fear or counting pennies in her checking account.

She was looking down as the co-owner and chief operating strategist of a legitimate, multibillion-dollar corporate empire that spanned international shipping, tech logistics, and real estate.

Behind her, the double doors of her executive office burst open.

“Mom!”

Ten-year-old Marco sprinted into the office, carrying a glowing tablet, looking breathless and triumphant. “We hacked the simulation network at the elite academy robotics tournament! We took first place, and Nico didn't even have to throw an apple this time!”

Nico, Alessandro, and Tommy followed closely behind him, all three wearing matching gold medals around their necks, looking like a victorious military battalion returning from the front lines.

And right behind them walked Victor, carrying seven-year-old Lucia on his shoulders, a soft, genuine smile gracing his face—a smile that only his family ever got to see.

Victor walked over to Serena, setting Lucia down gently so she could run over to hug her mother. He wrapped his arms around Serena’s waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder as they watched the city lights together.

“You know,” Victor murmured softly into her ear, “when you walked into my kitchen a year ago and asked where I kept the knives, I thought you were just another desperate nanny who wouldn't last twenty minutes.”

Serena smiled, turning around in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck, the midnight-blue sapphire ring sparkling under the office lights.

“And look at us now,” Serena whispered playfully. “You’re running a legitimate corporate empire, your sons are award-winning engineers instead of domestic terrorists, and I’m the most feared woman in international organized crime.”

Victor laughed—a deep, rich, resonant sound that filled the massive office with warmth.

“Only in my syndicate, my love,” Victor murmured, leaning down to press his lips gently against hers. “Only in my syndicate.”
