Chapter 2 - The Price of GratitudeThe cold wind howled down the alleyway as Evelyn stared at Julian's phone. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but she refused to let her stepbrother see her flinch. The live feed showed three men standing near the entrance of Arthur's apartment, holding canisters of lighter fluid.

"You are a monster, Julian," Evelyn spat, her knuckles turning white as she clenched her fists.

"I'm a businessman, Evelyn. There's a difference," Julian replied smoothly, straightening his tie. "You think you can rule Sterling International with sentimentality? You brought a million dollars in a suitcase to a street corner. You made him a target. Now, sign over your voting shares, or the old man pays for your arrogance."

Arthur, standing behind the cart, looked at the screen. To Julian’s surprise, the old man didn't beg for mercy. Instead, a strange, deep calm washed over Arthur’s wrinkled face. He gently placed a hand on Evelyn’s shoulder.

"Evie, my child," Arthur said, his voice surprisingly firm for a man of his age. "Do not give this vulture anything. A man who threatens the helpless has already lost his soul."

"Shut up, old man!" Julian snapped, pointing an angry finger at Arthur. "You're a nobody. A roach selling stale dough on a dirty sidewalk. I could erase you from this city with a single phone call!"

"You could try," Arthur said softly.

Evelyn looked at Arthur, confused. There was a sudden authority in the old man's posture that she had never noticed before. He wasn't cowering.

Suddenly, the headlights of Evelyn's luxury car flickered. Her loyal bodyguard, Marcus, stepped out of the driver's seat, his hand resting inside his jacket where his firearm was concealed. But Marcus wasn't looking at Julian. He was looking down the street.

The roar of multiple heavy engines echoed through the night. Three blacked-out SUVs tore around the corner, screeching to a halt and blocking Julian's sports car. Men in tactical gear stepped out, but they didn't look like Julian's thugs. They wore insignias of a private security firm that Evelyn recognized all too well—The Vanguard Group, the most elite and expensive private military corporation in the country.

Julian’s smirk vanished. "What is this? Evelyn, did you call backup?"

"No," Evelyn muttered, completely bewildered. "I didn't..."

The lead tactical officer marched straight past Evelyn, straight past Julian, and stopped directly in front of the old bread seller. The officer removed his helmet, bowing his head deeply.

"Sir," the officer said to Arthur. "Your perimeter was breached at your residence. The intruders have been neutralized. We are ready for your orders."

Evelyn’s jaw dropped. Julian staggered back, his face turning pale.

CHAPTER 2 HOOK: Arthur reached into his dirty apron, pulled out a sleek, encrypted satellite phone, and tossed it onto the suitcase of cash. He looked at Julian with eyes as sharp as flint. "Twenty years ago, I chose to leave the corporate world to live in peace after my family was betrayed by your father, Charles Sterling. You think you know who I am, boy? I own the land this entire district is built on."
