Chapter 3 - Ghost in the MachineThe revelation hung in the air like a thunderclap. Julian stepped backward, nearly tripping over his own expensive shoes. "No... that's impossible. Arthur Pendelton? The Pendelton Group went bankrupt twenty-five years ago! My father bought out all your assets!"

"Your father stole my assets through fraud and forgery, Julian," Arthur corrected him, his voice no longer that of a frail street vendor, but of a titan who had commanded boardrooms before Julian was even born. "I chose to disappear. I chose to live simply, feeding the hungry, watching how the world worked from the dirt. I watched your father build his empire on the blood of the innocent. And I watched this sweet girl struggle to survive against your family's cruelty."
Evelyn looked at Arthur, her mind racing. "Arthur... you knew who I was? All those years ago?"
Arthur smiled gently at Evelyn, his eyes softening. "When you were a little girl, Evie, I saw the fire in your eyes. I knew you were the daughter of my old friend, Richard Sterling, before Charles pushed him out. I fed you because it was the right thing to do, but also because I knew one day, you would grow up to take back what was stolen from your father."
Julian pulled out his phone, frantically trying to call his henchmen at Arthur's apartment, but the line was dead. He looked at the tactical team surrounding them. Panic finally set in.
"You think a few bodyguards can stop the Sterling board of directors?" Julian yelled, trying to reclaim his dominance. "Evelyn, tomorrow morning at 9 AM, the board will vote to remove you. We have the majority. Even if this old man has some hidden money, he can’t buy back a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate overnight!"
"He doesn't need to buy it back," Evelyn said, a fierce, predatory smile breaking across her face. The shock had worn off, and the brilliant corporate strategist inside her had awakened. She looked at Arthur, and they shared a silent look of perfect understanding. "Julian, you just admitted to attempted arson, extortion, and corporate theft in front of twelve highly trained federal-grade witnesses."
Marcus, Evelyn's bodyguard, stepped forward, holding up a small digital recorder. "Everything is recorded, Mr. Julian. And it's already uploaded to the secure cloud."
Julian’s face twisted in rage. "You think a tape will stop me? I’ll have my lawyers tie this up in court for a decade!" He turned around, slamming his car door shut, and sped away, his tires smoking against the asphalt.
Arthur turned to Evelyn, his expression becoming serious. "He’s right about one thing, Evie. The board meeting tomorrow is a trap. Julian and his faction have secretly acquired 51% of the proxy votes. They plan to hostilely take over your sector and liquidate your father’s original patents."
"How do you know all this, Arthur?" Evelyn asked, amazed.

CHAPTER 3 HOOK: Arthur walked over to his old bread cart, reached into the hollow bottom where the firewood was usually kept, and pulled out a dusty, metallic briefcase. He opened it to reveal a master hard drive with a glowing blue ledger. "Because for twenty years, every piece of data transmitted through this district’s fiber optic cables passed through my receiver. I have the digital keys to every illegal transaction your father and Julian ever made. Tomorrow, we don’t just defend your title, Evelyn. We destroy them."
