Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Executive Suite

The private medical wing on the 40th floor of Peterson Global was locked down under maximum security. Tom stood outside the glass-walled intensive care room, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his knuckles white. Inside, a team of private physicians, bound by strict non-disclosure agreements, worked frantically to stabilize Sarah. She was suffering from severe malnutrition, advanced physical exhaustion, and something else—something the doctors couldn't yet identify, a toxin lingering in her bloodstream.
Khloe sat in the corner of Tom's massive office, her drawing pencils forgotten. She was staring at her unicorn water bottle, her small face solemn.
"Daddy?" Khloe's quiet voice broke the oppressive silence of the room.
Tom turned, trying to force a reassuring smile onto his face, though his chest felt like it was being crushed by a hydraulic press. "Yes, sweetheart?"
"Why did you look at that lady like you saw a monster?" Khloe asked, her innocent eyes cutting right through his defenses. "She’s not a monster. She’s nice. She told me my name was beautiful before she fell asleep."
Tom walked over, kneeling in front of his daughter. How could he explain to a six-year-old that the woman downstairs was supposed to be a ghost? Sarah Mitchell had been his brilliant co-founder, his fiercest confidante, and the woman who had helped him design the foundational algorithms that built Peterson Global. Seven years ago, she had suddenly disappeared, accused of stealing millions from the company. Days later, her car had plunged off a cliff in the Swiss Alps. The body had been burned beyond recognition, but the dental records matched. Tom had mourned her, buried her memory, and used the tragedy to consolidate absolute power over the company.
Now, she was working as a minimum-wage cleaning lady in his own building.
"She’s an old friend, Khloe," Tom said softly, rubbing his daughter's shoulder. "A friend I thought went far away a long time ago. I was just... surprised."
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors of his office burst open. Marcus Vance, Tom’s Chief Operating Officer and his most trusted right-hand man, stepped inside. His face was flushed, his tie slightly askew—a rare sight for a man known for his icy composure.
"Tom, we have a massive situation," Marcus said, his voice tense as he glanced briefly at Khloe. "The board is in an absolute uproar. Rumors are spreading like wildfire through the lower floors. People saw you drop to your knees for a janitor. They saw your reaction. And worse... the press just caught wind that a mysterious woman was brought to your private medical suite."
"I don't give a damn about the board, Marcus," Tom growled, standing up, his billionaire authority returning in full force. "Fire anyone who talks. Erase the lobby security footage from the last two hours. Now."
"It's too late for that," Marcus said, stepping closer, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The security feeds from the lobby? They didn't just malfunction, Tom. They were wiped from an external server. Someone hacked our mainframe from the inside out. And that's not all. Look at what your daughter is holding."
Tom frowned, turning to look at Khloe. She was fiddling with the base of her unicorn water bottle. With a small click, the plastic bottom spun loose, revealing a hidden compartment that Tom had never seen before.
Out spilled a tiny, high-tech silver flash drive and a crumpled piece of paper covered in frantic, handwritten medical formulas.
"Khloe," Tom breathed, stepping toward her. "Where did you get that?"

"The lady put it in my bag when I gave her the water," Khloe said, her voice trembling as she sensed the sudden danger in the room. "She told me to keep it safe from the bad men."
HOOK: Before Tom could take the drive, the lights in the entire 50-story skyscraper suddenly flared violently and died. The backup generators failed to kick in. The heavy, electronic security doors of the executive suite slammed shut with a definitive, terrifying thud, locking Tom, Khloe, and Marcus inside total darkness.
