Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Past

"You betrayed me," Tom said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. He stepped in front of Khloe, completely shielding her from Marcus's weapon. "Every contract, every acquisition, every secret I shared with you for a decade..."

"Was immediately copied and sent to Victor Sterling," Marcus finished the sentence for him, his face devoid of emotion. "You're a brilliant businessman, Tom, but you're blinded by your own arrogance. You truly believed you built this empire alone. You forgot that empires are built on the backs of people you step over. Now, the drive. I won't ask again."

Khloe whimpered behind Tom, her little fingers clutching the fabric of his trousers. "Daddy, I'm scared."

"Close your eyes, sweetie," Tom whispered.

In a split-second calculation that only a man used to high-stakes gambling could make, Tom didn't hand over the drive. Instead, he grabbed the heavy crystal award sitting on his desk—the "CEO of the Year" trophy—and hurled it with brutal force at Marcus’s head while simultaneously pulling Khloe to the ground.

Thwip!

The suppressed pistol fired, the bullet shattering the glass partition behind Tom. The crystal trophy struck Marcus squarely in the shoulder, throwing off his aim and sending him crashing into the mahogany desk.

Tom didn't waste a second. He scooped Khloe into his arms, grabbed the silver drive, and bolted through the side door of his office—a private emergency exit that led directly to the building's internal maintenance shaft.

They plunged into the concrete labyrinth of the tower's skeleton. Tom ran down the metal stairs, his heart hammering against his ribs, Khloe clinging to his neck like a frightened koala. The sound of Marcus's heavy footsteps shouting for backup echoed from the stairwell above.

They couldn't go down to the lobby—Victor's men were there. They couldn't go up—they'd be trapped.

Tom kicked open the heavy fire door to the 40th floor—the medical wing. The hallways were dark, lit only by the eerie green glow of emergency exit signs. He ran to the room where Sarah lay. The medical staff had fled or been incapacitated; the machines were running on failing battery backups.

Sarah’s eyes fluttered open as Tom burst into the room. She saw Khloe, and a spark of life returned to her dull eyes.

"Tom..." she gasped, struggling to sit up. "You have to... you have to listen to me. The drive... it's not what Victor thinks it is."

"Sarah, we have to get you out of here, Marcus is a traitor, the building is surrounded—"

"No! Listen to me!" Sarah gripped Tom’s lapel with surprising, desperate strength. She pulled him close, her breath smelling faintly of copper. "Seven years ago... I didn't steal money from you. Marcus framed me because I found out what he and Victor were doing. They were experimenting on people... on pregnant women in the corporate housing sectors... trying to develop cognitive enhancements."

Tom’s breath hitched. "What does that have to do with us?"

Sarah looked past Tom, her eyes fixing onto Khloe, who was watching them with wide, tearful eyes.

"Tom... your wife, Clara... she didn't die of a sudden illness in the hospital six years ago," Sarah wept, the truth tearing out of her like a physical wound. "Clara discovered what they were doing. She tried to stop them. They poisoned her. But before she died, she gave birth to Khloe. Khloe wasn't born in that hospital, Tom. I delivered her in a hidden safehouse. Clara made me swear to protect her. The DNA report... the birth records on that drive... Tom, Khloe isn't your biological daughter. She's Clara's... and she's mine. We used a combined genetic sequence. Khloe is the successful result of the project Victor has been killing for. Her blood carries the cure to the very toxin he's using."

HOOK: Tom froze, his world fracturing into a thousand jagged pieces as he stared at the little girl he had raised as his own. Before he could process the staggering revelation, the glass wall of the medical room shattered inward. A flashbang grenade rolled across the floor, blinding them with a deafening explosion of white light.
