CHAPTER 1 — THE GIRL IN THE MAID'S UNIFORM

"

Sometimes the cruelest enemies don't live outside your home... they eat dinner at your table."

The marble floor reflected every crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling of the Ashford Mansion. Everything sparkled with wealth... except for the young girl kneeling on the cold floor.

Seventeen-year-old Emily Ashford wore a faded gray maid's uniform that was far too large for her. Her delicate hands were raw from scrubbing expensive marble day after day, while silent tears slipped from her face and disappeared into the cleaning water before anyone could notice.

She hadn't always lived like this.

Years ago, Emily had been the princess of the mansion.

She was the only daughter of billionaire entrepreneur Richard Ashford, one of the most respected business leaders in America. After Emily's mother passed away from cancer, Richard buried himself in work to cope with the grief. Business trips became longer. Meetings became endless.

Eventually he married again.

Her new stepmother, Victoria Sinclair, arrived smiling, elegant, and charming.

Everyone believed she was the perfect woman.

Everyone...

Except Emily.

The nightmare didn't begin immediately.

At first Victoria acted kind whenever Richard was home. She bought Emily gifts, hugged her in front of guests, and constantly reminded everyone how lucky she felt to become her "second mother."

But once Richard left on another overseas business trip...

Everything changed.

Emily's designer clothes disappeared.

Her bedroom became Victoria's walk-in closet.

Her meals were replaced with leftovers from the kitchen.

The private tutors were dismissed.

The servants were ordered to treat Emily like one of them.

Anyone who showed kindness was fired immediately.

Within months, the billionaire's daughter had become nothing more than unpaid labor inside her own home.

Victoria enjoyed every second of it.

Every morning she invented new punishments.

Sometimes Emily had to polish every staircase by hand.

Sometimes she cleaned windows for hours under the blazing sun.

Sometimes Victoria deliberately spilled wine across expensive carpets just to watch Emily clean them again.

Her half-siblings—Nathan and Chloe—quickly learned from their mother.

They mocked Emily openly.

"Careful, maid," Nathan laughed one afternoon, kicking over the bucket she'd just filled. "Dad pays people to clean better than you."

Chloe giggled while filming Emily on her phone.

"Maybe we should post this online."

Emily lowered her head.

Not because she was weak...

Because she knew no one would believe her.

Every security camera had mysteriously stopped recording months earlier.

Every servant feared Victoria too much to speak.

Richard rarely called directly.

Victoria always answered first.

"Emily is at school."

"Emily is sleeping."

"Emily is visiting friends."

Lie after lie after lie.

Richard never suspected a thing.

One rainy afternoon, Victoria hosted an extravagant wine party with wealthy socialites.

The women laughed as Emily served drinks in silence.

One guest frowned.

"Isn't that Richard's daughter?"

Victoria smiled sweetly.

"Oh no."

"She insisted on learning responsibility."

"Children from rich families become spoiled."

"I believe hard work builds character."

The women applauded.

Emily said nothing.

Then came the final humiliation.

Victoria deliberately poured an entire glass of red wine across the spotless marble floor.

"Oh dear..."

She looked down at Emily.

"Kneel."

"Use your hands."

"No mop."

The room burst into laughter.

Emily slowly dropped onto her knees.

Her tears mixed with the expensive wine.

Just as she reached for the cloth...

The enormous front doors suddenly opened.

Heavy footsteps echoed through the mansion.

Every servant froze.

Victoria's smile disappeared.

Standing beneath the grand chandelier...

Still wearing his travel coat...

Richard Ashford had come home three weeks earlier than expected.

His eyes scanned the room...

Then stopped.

On the trembling girl wearing a maid's uniform.

"Dad...?"

The cloth slipped from Emily's shaking fingers.

Richard's face turned completely pale.

For several endless seconds...

No one dared breathe.

Victoria forced a smile.

"Darling..."

"You're home early..."

Richard never looked at her.

His voice became terrifyingly calm.

"Why..."

"...is my daughter on her knees?"

No one answered.

May you like

And that silence...

Would destroy an entire family.
