chapter 1

No one in the hospital lobby paid much attention to the old man.
His gray suit was clean but decades out of style. His shoes were polished, yet worn thin. In his trembling hands, he carried a battered leather briefcase that looked as though it had survived a lifetime of secrets.
The receptionists assumed he was just another retired man coming for another routine appointment.
They couldn't have been more wrong.
Without saying a word, he walked directly to the youngest doctor on duty.
"Doctor..." the old man whispered, his voice barely audible.
"I've been looking for you... for twenty-six years."
The young doctor looked confused.
"I'm sorry... Have we met before?"
The old man's eyes filled with tears.
"I prayed you would never recognize me."
The room suddenly fell silent.
Even the nurses stopped moving.
The old man slowly placed the weathered briefcase on the examination table.
"I don't have much time left."
"I need you to open this... before it's too late."
The young doctor hesitated.
Inside the hospital, everyone watched with growing curiosity.
Who was this stranger?
Why was he speaking as if he had known the doctor his entire life?
The doctor unlocked the rusty brass latches.
The briefcase creaked open.
Inside were hundreds of neatly tied letters.
Yellowed photographs.
Old legal documents.
And beneath them...
A thick envelope with one sentence written across the front.
"To my son... if destiny ever brings us together."
The doctor's heartbeat stopped.
"My... son?"
He laughed nervously.
"There must be some mistake."
The old man slowly shook his head.
"No mistake."
"I was there the night you were born."
"You were stolen before I could even hold you."
The words hit like lightning.
The young doctor's hands began to shake.
His entire life, he had believed he was abandoned as a baby outside an orphanage.
That was the story his adoptive parents had always been told.
Could everything he believed about himself be a lie?
Before he could ask another question, the hospital doors burst open.
Three men in expensive black suits rushed inside.
Their expressions were cold.
One of them shouted,
"There he is!"
Another pointed directly at the old man.
"Take the briefcase."
"Destroy everything."
Patients screamed.
Nurses backed away.
The old man's face turned pale.
"They found me..."
He grabbed the young doctor's wrist with surprising strength.
"Listen carefully."
"If they get what's inside that case..."
"They won't just erase my life..."
"They'll erase yours too."
Before the doctor could react...
One of the suited men lunged toward the table.
The briefcase crashed onto the floor.
Hundreds of letters scattered across the hospital lobby.
One photograph slid across the polished tiles...
Stopping right at the doctor's feet.
He bent down and picked it up.
His eyes widened.
The picture showed a much younger version of the old man...
Standing beside a smiling woman holding a newborn baby.
Around the baby's tiny wrist...
Was the exact same crescent-shaped birthmark the doctor had hidden beneath his watch his entire life.
His breath caught.
The old man wasn't lying.
But before anyone could speak another word...
A gunshot echoed through the hospital.
The lights flickered.
The old man collapsed.
And someone disappeared with the envelope labeled:
May you like
"To my son..."
