CHAPTER 4 — The Woman Vanished Into the Ruins… But the DNA Report Changed Everything

The explosion threw Ethan across the room.
Concrete crashed around him.
Dust swallowed the abandoned maternity ward in seconds.
For a moment...
He couldn't hear anything except the ringing in his ears.
Then...
Silence.
"Ethan!"
Someone was calling his name.
Strong hands pulled him from the broken floor just before another section of the ceiling collapsed.
Detective Sarah Mitchell dragged him into the hallway.
"What the hell were you doing up here?"
Ethan pushed himself free.
"There was a woman!"
Sarah frowned.
"What woman?"
"My mother!"
Sarah looked toward the destroyed Room 317.
"There was nobody inside."
"No... she was standing right there!"
Ethan pointed toward the collapsed floor.
"The explosion happened after she appeared."
Sarah's face turned serious.
"When we arrived..."
She hesitated.
"The entire east wing was empty."
"It has been empty for twenty-six years."
Ethan stared at her.
"No..."
"I spoke to her."
"She knew my name."
"She had the same necklace."
Sarah didn't answer.
Instead, she reached into the rubble.
She picked up something half-buried beneath broken concrete.
A silver pendant.
The exact crescent-shaped necklace Ethan had worn since childhood.
Only...
This one was broken in half.
Hours later...
Police sealed the entire hospital.
Bomb investigators searched every inch of the abandoned wing.
The official report shocked everyone.
The explosion wasn't caused by old wiring.
Someone had planted military-grade explosives.
Recently.
Someone had wanted Room 317 erased forever.
Inside the police command center...
Sarah placed three photographs on the table.
Photo One.
Richard Vale.
Dead.
Photo Two.
Victoria Hawthorne.
Missing.
Photo Three.
A smiling young nurse from twenty-six years ago.
Ethan's hands trembled.
It was the woman from Room 317.
"My mother..."
Sarah slowly nodded.
"Her name was Emily Carter."
Ethan frowned.
"Not Isabelle?"
Sarah looked surprised.
"Who told you Isabelle was your mother?"
"Victoria."
Sarah leaned back.
"Then Victoria lied."
Ethan's heart pounded.
"Emily Carter disappeared the night you were born."
"No body."
"No fingerprints."
"No records after that night."
"Officially..."
"She never existed."
Just then...
A young forensic technician burst into the room.
"Detective!"
"We found DNA."
Sarah stood immediately.
"From the explosion?"
The technician nodded.
"And something else."
He handed Sarah a sealed envelope.
She opened it.
Her expression changed instantly.
"What is it?" Ethan asked.
Sarah slowly looked at him.
"We compared your DNA."
"Against Richard Vale."
Ethan held his breath.
"And?"
"Richard wasn't your father."
"I know."
Sarah continued.
"He wasn't your grandfather either."
Ethan frowned.
"Then why did he protect me?"
Sarah swallowed hard.
"Because according to the DNA..."
"He was your uncle."
The room went silent.
Uncle?
Nothing made sense anymore.
"If Richard was my uncle..."
"Then where are my parents?"
Sarah didn't answer.
Instead...
She slid another page across the table.
"This came from a classified adoption file."
At the top...
One sentence was stamped in bright red.
BIOLOGICAL FATHER: UNKNOWN
Below that...
Another line had been blacked out.
Someone had deliberately erased the mother's identity.
Meanwhile...
Across town...
Victoria Hawthorne entered a heavily guarded mansion.
Every window was bulletproof.
Every hallway filled with armed security.
She walked into a private office.
An elderly man sat in a wheelchair facing the fireplace.
His face remained hidden.
Without turning around, he spoke.
"Richard is dead."
"Yes."
"The boy survived?"
"Yes."
A long silence followed.
The old man sighed.
"I warned Richard."
"He should have killed the child twenty-six years ago."
Victoria lowered her head.
"He couldn't."
"Because the child looked like her."
The old man's hand tightened around his cane.
"Sentiment destroyed everything."
He finally turned his wheelchair.
Ethan would have recognized him instantly.
The man in the chair...
Was Michael Cole.
Ethan's adoptive father.
The man who had supposedly died eleven years earlier.
Alive.
Older.
Weaker.
But very much alive.
Michael looked toward Victoria.
"Prepare the jet."
"It's time I finally meet my son."
Back at the hospital...
Ethan sat alone in Richard's room.
Everything felt unreal.
His uncle was dead.
His mother might be alive.
His adoptive father might have lied about everything.
Then...
He remembered the cassette recorder.
It had disappeared during the explosion.
Unless...
He searched Richard's old briefcase once more.
Hidden beneath the false bottom...
His fingers touched something.
A tiny memory card.
He rushed to a computer.
The first video file began playing.
The screen flickered.
A frightened pregnant woman appeared.
Tears streamed down her face.
She looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"My name is Emily."
"I'm your mother."
"They're coming."
"They're going to tell you lies."
"They'll say your father abandoned us."
"They'll say I died."
"They'll even change your name."
She paused, trying to stop crying.
"But never believe one thing..."
"Your father never stopped looking for you."
Suddenly...
A loud knock echoed behind the camera.
Emily gasped.
"They're here."
She looked straight into the lens one last time.
"If you ever meet a man named Michael Cole..."
"Run."
The video abruptly ended.
Before Ethan could react...
His phone vibrated.
A text message from an unknown number appeared.
"Look out your window."
Ethan slowly turned.
Across the street...
A black limousine had stopped.
An elderly man stepped out.
He smiled.
Raised one hand.
And waved at Ethan...
May you like
Like a father greeting the son he had never truly lost.
