CHAPTER 5 — The Man He Buried Eleven Years Ago Smiled… Then Revealed the Truth That Destroyed Everything

Ethan stood frozen by the hospital window.
The elderly man across the street smiled gently.
It was impossible.
Absolutely impossible.
Michael Cole.
The man Ethan had buried eleven years ago.
The man whose funeral hundreds had attended.
The man whose grave Ethan still visited every Father's Day.
Yet there he was.
Alive.
Breathing.
Waiting.
The limousine door remained open.
As if he already knew Ethan would come.
Detective Sarah noticed Ethan's expression.
"What is it?"
Ethan pointed toward the street.
Sarah looked outside.
Her face changed instantly.
"No..."
She grabbed her radio.
"Every unit! Black limousine outside the east entrance!"
By the time officers rushed outside...
The limousine was gone.
Not speeding.
Not fleeing.
Simply...
Gone.
As though it had never been there.
Only one thing remained on the sidewalk.
A small wooden box.
Ethan picked it up.
His hands trembled.
Inside...
Was his childhood teddy bear.
The faded blue bear with one missing eye.
The toy his adoptive father had given him when he was five years old.
Wrapped around its neck was a handwritten note.
Meet me where we became father and son. Come alone.
No signature.
There didn't need to be one.
That night...
Ethan drove to the only place the note could mean.
The small lakeside cabin.
Every summer of his childhood had been spent there.
Fishing.
Learning to build campfires.
Listening to Michael tell stories beneath the stars.
Those memories had always been the happiest of Ethan's life.
Now...
Every one of them felt like a lie.
The cabin looked exactly the same.
A warm light glowed inside.
Someone was waiting.
Ethan slowly opened the front door.
Michael Cole sat beside the fireplace.
Older.
Thinner.
His gray hair almost white.
But unmistakably alive.
He looked up and smiled.
"You've grown into a good man."
Ethan's voice shook.
"I buried you."
Michael nodded.
"I know."
"I cried over your grave."
"I know."
"I blamed myself for not saving you."
"I know."
Ethan slammed his fist onto the table.
"WHO WAS IN THAT COFFIN?"
Michael closed his eyes.
"A man who volunteered to die in my place."
Silence.
"You... faked your death?"
"I had to."
"No!"
"You chose to!"
Michael looked at him sadly.
"If I hadn't disappeared..."
"You would have been murdered before your fifteenth birthday."
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"You expect me to believe that?"
Michael reached into a drawer.
He placed an old newspaper on the table.
The headline read:
LOCAL MAN KILLED IN CAR EXPLOSION
The photograph showed Michael's wrecked vehicle.
Ethan remembered the accident.
The fire.
The closed coffin.
The investigators saying the body was too badly burned to identify.
Michael slid another document across the table.
A classified government file.
Across the top:
Witness Protection Program
Ethan stared in disbelief.
"You were in witness protection?"
Michael nodded.
"For twenty-six years."
"From who?"
Michael didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he opened a dusty wooden chest.
Inside were dozens of old photographs.
Ethan as a baby.
Ethan's first birthday.
First day of school.
High school graduation.
Medical school.
Pictures Ethan had never seen before.
Someone had secretly watched him his entire life.
"You followed me..."
"Every birthday."
"Every Christmas."
"Every graduation."
Michael smiled sadly.
"I never stopped being your father."
Ethan's anger cracked.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because someone else was watching too."
Michael reached for the fireplace poker.
Instead of stirring the fire...
He pressed it against a loose brick.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside lay a thick red folder.
Stamped across the front:
PROJECT PHOENIX
Michael pushed it toward Ethan.
"Everything began with this."
Ethan opened the folder.
Medical experiments.
DNA reports.
Birth records.
Government contracts.
Hundreds of classified pages.
One photograph made him stop breathing.
Twenty newborn babies.
Each wearing identical hospital bracelets.
Each marked with the same crescent symbol.
His birthmark.
"What is this?"
Michael's voice became almost a whisper.
"You weren't the only baby born that night."
"There were twenty of you."
Ethan looked again.
Twenty babies.
Nineteen names had been crossed out with black ink.
Only one remained.
Infant #17 — Ethan. STATUS: UNKNOWN
"What happened to the others?"
Michael slowly looked into the fire.
"They all died."
Ethan felt sick.
"No..."
"Officially..."
Michael corrected.
Then he looked directly into Ethan's eyes.
"They were declared dead."
A cold chill ran down Ethan's spine.
"You mean..."
Michael nodded.
"They're alive."
Before Ethan could ask another question...
A loud engine roared outside.
Headlights flooded the cabin windows.
Michael's face turned pale.
"They found us."
Black SUVs surrounded the cabin.
Red laser sights appeared on the walls.
One...
Five...
Ten...
Twenty.
Every window.
Every door.
A loudspeaker echoed through the forest.
"Michael Cole."
"You have one minute."
"Hand over Subject Seventeen."
Ethan stared at Michael.
"Subject... Seventeen?"
Michael looked at him with tears in his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"I should have told you the truth years ago."
"What truth?"
Michael swallowed hard.
Then he whispered the words that shattered Ethan's world forever.
"You weren't born in that hospital."
"You were created there."
The cabin lights suddenly went out.
Gunfire erupted from every direction.
And hidden beneath the floorboards...
May you like
A metallic door slowly unlocked by itself.
