Chapter 8 - Epilogue and the New Beginning

Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the windows of our brand-new apartment—twelve miles away from my mother’s house, in a safe, sunlit neighborhood with no blue notebooks, no locked basement rooms, and no secret surveillance files.
Sophie sat at the kitchen island, happily eating a stack of blueberry pancakes with extra syrup, her paper crown sitting proudly and straight atop her head. The bruise on her cheek had faded to a faint yellow, healing alongside the deeper invisible scars that time and safety were slowly washing away.
My phone buzzed on the counter. It was an official notification from the district attorney’s office.
My mother, Arthur Sterling, and David had all been formally indicted on multiple felony counts of conspiracy, medical fraud, financial exploitation, and child endangerment. None of them would ever see bail. The suburban house on Elm Street was already seized by federal marshals, destined to be auctioned off to benefit children’s advocacy charities.
“Mom?” Sophie asked, looking up from her plate with a bright, untroubled smile. “Can we invite Dr. Chen over for my next birthday? The real one?”
May you like
I walked over, kissed the top of her head, and pulled her into a warm, unbreakable embrace.
“We can invite anyone we want, sweetheart,” I whispered, looking out the sparkling clean window toward the horizon where the sun was rising higher and brighter than ever before. “Because this is our home now. And nobody is ever taking that away from us.”
