Chapter 10 - The Road Ahead and the Ultimate JusticeSix months later.

The brutal summer heat of that fateful afternoon felt like a lifetime away. Outside my house, crisp autumn leaves danced across the manicured lawn of a quiet, peaceful neighborhood.

Inside the kitchen, the smell of burnt toast and boiling water filled the air.

"Leo! Did you pack Maya's extra diapers in the pink bag?" I called out, flipping a pancake on the skillet.

"Got 'em, Dad!" a cheerful voice yelled back down the hallway.

Dad.

That single word still sent a warm, electric thrill straight to my heart every single time I heard it.

Leo bounded into the kitchen, looking healthy, strong, and completely transformed. The scars on his back had faded into silver lines—visible badges of honor from the day he stared death in the face and refused to back down. He was wearing a brand-new middle school backpack, grinning ear-to-ear as he balanced baby Maya—now walking on chubby little legs—on his hip.

"Ready for your first real school dance, buddy?" I asked, handing him a glass of orange juice.

"Ready," Leo beamed, setting Maya down on her fluffy playmat so she could chase our new golden retriever puppy.

As I watched them play, my phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It was an official email notification from the federal prosecutor's office.

Case Update: State v. Victor Vance & Clara Sterling. Verdict: Guilty on all counts. Sentenced to consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole.

I swiped the notification away without a second thought. Their chapter of darkness was closed forever, locked away where it belonged.

What mattered wasn't the monsters who had tried to destroy these children in the dark. What mattered was the light that had survived.

I walked over, wrapped one arm around Leo's shoulders, and looked down at little Maya as she laughed and clapped her hands at the puppy.

We had survived the heat. And our real story was just beginning.
