Chapter 5 - A Visitor in the DarkI pushed the door open softly, stepping into the dimly lit hospital room. Little Maya was sleeping soundly in a clear plastic bassinet beside the bed, hooked up to a slow IV drip. Leo was propped up on pillows, his back swathed in white bandages, looking small and fragile against the crisp hospital sheets.

When he saw me, his pale face lit up with a faint, tired smile.
"Mr. Mark," he whispered, his voice still raspy.
"Hey, champion," I said softly, pulling a chair up beside his bed. "How are you feeling?" Like a million bucks compared to earlier. The nurses gave me some magic ice cream, and they said Maya is doing great."
I chuckled, feeling a lump form in my throat. "She's a tough little girl. Just like her big brother."
Leo looked down at his hands, suddenly turning shy. "I was really scared, Mr. Mark. When Uncle Victor locked the door and walked away... I thought nobody was ever coming."
"I know, buddy. But you didn't panic. You protected your sister," I said, reaching out to gently squeeze his uninjured hand. "Do you know how brave you have to be to take the heat like that?"
Leo looked up, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "Mom told me before she died... she told me that my most important job in the world was to take care of Maya. She said no matter what happened, I had to keep her safe."
"Well, your mom would be damn proud of you right now," I said firmly. "You kept your promise."
We sat in silence for a moment, the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor filling the quiet room. But my mind was racing. What happened next? Two orphaned children, their guardians exposed as monsters, with no immediate family left in the state. Where would they go? Child Protective Services? Foster care?
As if reading my thoughts, the door clicked open again, and Detective Miller stepped inside, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray suit carrying a thick manila folder.
"Sorry to interrupt," Detective Miller said softly. "Leo, Mark, this is Sarah Jenkins from Child and Family Services."
Sarah stepped forward with a warm, compassionate smile. She looked at Leo, then over at Maya sleeping peacefully in her bassinet.
"Hello, Leo. I've been talking with the police, and I've reviewed your case file," Sarah said gently. "First of all, I want you to know you are completely safe now. Your uncle is in jail, and he will never, ever be able to hurt you or your sister again."
Leo let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. "Where... where are we going?"
May you like
Sarah exchanged a brief, meaningful look with Detective Miller before turning her gaze toward me.
"Well, Leo, that's actually why I'm here. Because of your incredible bravery, and because of the unique circumstances of your family trust, we are looking at emergency placement options. But..." She paused, taking a breath. "There is something unusual happening downstairs right now. Someone just walked into the hospital lobby insisting they are family, and they have court orders that change everything."
