Chapter 10 - THE UNFINISHED EMPIREThe evening sun cast long, golden shadows across the Chicago River as Odessa stepped out of the private elevator onto the penthouse floor.

She held a fresh stack of operational reports under one arm, her mind already racing through the agenda for the following week's international board expansion. The worst was behind them—or so she had thought.

When she pushed open the heavy oak door to Suite 3201, she found Theo standing by the window. His back was turned, but even from ten feet away, she could feel the heavy tension radiating from his shoulders.

"Theo?" she asked, dropping her files onto the table. "Is something wrong? The board meeting went perfectly."

Theo slowly turned around. His face was a mask of cold, calculated focus—the exact expression he had worn on the day she first walked into this room.

He held out a single, unmarked white envelope.

"What is that?" Odessa asked, stepping closer.

"A message," Theo said quietly. "From Zurich."

Odessa pulled the single sheet of heavy linen paper from the envelope. Her eyes scanned the printed text, and the breath caught in her throat. It wasn't about Julian Sterling. It wasn't about Marcus Vance or Sarah Merritt.

It was a legal deed—a dormant secondary holding company registered under a name she had never seen before, tied directly to the mysterious circumstances surrounding the car accident that had taken Theo’s sight twelve years ago.

"They didn't just want the hotel, Odessa," Theo said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper that cut through the silence of the penthouse. "They wanted the entire Kane family erased. And whoever is pulling the strings now... they know you're standing beside me."

Odessa looked from the paper up to Theo’s blind, unblinking eyes. For a split second, a shiver ran down her spine. The trap she thought she had escaped was bigger, darker, and much deeper than she could have ever imagined.

She didn't back away. Instead, she stepped closer, reached out, and placed her hand firmly over his clenched fist.

"Then it's a good thing," Odessa said, her voice steady and resolute, "that I never learned how to run away."

Theo’s hand relaxed slightly beneath hers. A slow, determined smile touched his lips.

The empire was theirs now. And they were ready for whoever came next.
